Wave Conversion Output Levels

After composing a song I make sure on playback that the main monitor and the speaker output is high enough so that I'm at the top of the green, and at times slightly breaking into the yellow.  In other words, I try to keep things very high without causing distortion or noise.  Although I'm consistent in this, the final wave file output can vary... some songs seem louder and others quiter... I can't seem to get even output among my songs.

Not only that, but when I hear other song writers (through my speakers), often their output is louder than mine.  It's like a 50% difference in loudness.  Yet, if I crank things up any more, I get high into the yellow meter levels and it becomes a bit noisy.

Any suggestions for the above?
