GA X58A-UDR3: Help with CPU socket

Hi,

I got all my parts and I have started putting it all together
but I am running into something bizarre and since this is my
first build I figure I would ask before breaking anything.

2 things that confuses with the "ring" holding the CPU:

a) the ring is loose; ie I can shake it slightly (normal?

b) once the cpu I can't close the ring

   - yes I have aligned the 2 holes of the CPU board with the pins in the socket
   - the cpu is perfectly seated

Am I missing something here? I'll check with Gigagbyte but I'd rather know before
hand if I will sound totally stupid....rrrrr

Thanks

Mario

If properly aligned (make sure you have pin 1 in the right location) and no bent pins the CPU should drop in flush with the top of the socket. Make sure you have disengaged and swung the locking lever up before you try to drop the CPU in. The ring (metal load plate) has to be lifted up before you seat the CPU and lowered over the top of the CPU once it is flush with the socket. There are fine pictures showing the process step by step on page 14 of this manual.

    Hi,

I did check the manual multiple times before posting my question.

By the way...yes I have opened the lid before installing the CPU.

The problem I have is when I want to close the lid; right now I don't
see how I can do this without seriously pushing the handle on....and
    this is wha worries me.

With the hole and pin guides it's impossible to mount the CPU in the
    wrong position.

So, normally I should be able to smoothly push the little bar back in
    its resting position right?

You have to apply some force to push the handle back into place (there's going to be some resistance). I was concerned myself (I have the same board).  If you have followed all the steps as slartabartfast said, then there shouldn't be any worries.

It's not what we're doing, it's how you do it :)

Before going to bed last night I had another go at it. I took to CPU out and put in
back in ensuring everything was aligned.

Crossing my fingers I decided to push harder on the arm to close and it is with a great relief that I finally put it back in its hook.

The pleasure of assembling something for the first time....:)

And now I have to figure out how to mount my SSD drive in my Antec Elite case as the holes of the 2.5" to 3.5" extension brackets I bought don't match the screws location on of the rails system antec is using.

    Cheers!

I HATE when that happens! Glad you got the CPU in! Have fun with it and good luck with the system build!

If you thought that was hairy, you should have tried installing some of the old spring clips that were used to mount the CPU fan. Pressing down with 25 lbs of force with a screwdriver blade aimed to destroy a fragile motherboard if you slipped...interesting.

    Ahh yes!!
    Wasn't that fun!!!!

One wrong move and it was all over as the screwdriver drove itself into the motherboard.

Another PITA is the clips holding the stock fan with the Intel Q series.
They will snap if you just look at them wrong.

I always buy an after market cooler.
I think even the cheapest one on the market is better than the stock one.

In w7 64, where can you check the drivers installed for that mobo?

Is it in devices somewhere? Right click my computer, go to properties...?

Easy way to the Device Manager, Hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break Key.  When the panel comes up, Device Manager is listed in the upper left of the panel.

But I don't think you can see the motherboard "chipset drivers" if that is what you are asking. Just the individual devices.

If I check the drivers for my mobo it seems to tell me they are from Microsoft from 2006. But I installed all the chipset drivers from the disc that came with the mobo...and went to update those...but no updates were newer online than the disc. Where can I see the chipset drivers as fireberd said?

    x58A-UD3R Rev 2.0 bios FB

I had to flash to FB bios because my mobo wasn't recognising my 6g of ram...only 2 gig of it. A known problem with this mobo.

Now I am having cold boot failures...another known problem with this mobo.

Apparently the stable beta bios FC1 fixes this.

    Anyone experience similar?
