Scared of 64 bits
I'm sure this has been asked and answered. But, we all know how the search function works. Anyway. If I run Win7 64 and Sonar32, will the 32bit plugs and heavy sample based synths be able to address more than 4 gigs of ram? How bout 64 bit plugs and soft synths? Thanks.

no, you have to run 64bit sonar in a 64bit OS in order to address more than 4G of RAM for anything accessing RAM from inside sonar.

When I went to Windows 7 64 bit and the 64 bit version of Sonar (8.5.3 Professional) I was leery about it and kept my Vista 32 bit/Sonar installation in case I would need it. I have Win 7 on one hard drive and the Vista on a separate hard drive. But, I've never had the need to use the Vista/32 bit version. Everything I've done, the 64 bit version and plug-ins have been all I've needed.

the answer is actually YES you can run Sonar in 32bit mode on a 64bit OS then use VE Pro to access the rest of the ram whilst keeping 32 bit compatibility. Jbridge will also do this but for sampling VE Pro is a better product. at this point Sonar's bit bridge is greatly improved however. up unitil recently we were installing Sonar in both 32 and 64 bit, at this point in time we are just doing the 64bit as it works well and the few things that may have issues are usually addressed with Jbridge. there are a few still. UAD for 1 that still needs a 32bit host. Cubase on the other hand... we still do both 32/64.

Thanks guys. Scott, I tried to follow (after googling) what exactly VE Pro is. But, hmm. Pretty confusing. Is it a plug in that is a virt synth, and a host for other plugs? I think there's more to it though? Does this magic plug allow using more than 4 gigs ram on a 32 bit system? And, is it a sequencer or do you need a separate host. Actually, it appears to be a sequencer without the sequencer if you get my meaning. And, it does seem to be geared to the ethernet joining of 2 hosts I think? I've done that before (using midi) and really don't want to go that route again. thanks.

Did someone say that the UAD boards require a 32bit OS?

HI, VE Pro (vienna Ensemple Pro) will NOT allow access to past 4 gig ram with a 32 OS. it will allow access past 4 gig of ram to a 64 bit OS with a 32 bit HOST (IE:Sonar) basically the same idea of jbridge but VE Pro is much more elegant and has more control particularly for Samples. it does include a small but decent library. (just a bonus) its a host for samples like Kontakt basically but more than that. while Sonars bit bridge is vastly improved there are still some things like UAD/Waves that require a 32bit host (not to be confused with a 32bit OS). there is no reason to not be running a 64 bit OS. there are instances where XP still makes sense and thats with older systems. Win7 really should be on newer (core i7/Phenom) systems.

I run Windows 7 64-bit with two UAD-2 cards and one UAD-1 card installed. I use 64-bit Sonar 8.5 with UAD plug-ins (via BitBridge) on every project without any issues.

more and more plug makers are updating to 64 bit.... melodyne just sent an email... free upgrade coming next month.... for improvements to some issues, and it is compatible with 32 AND 64 bit systems....... very cool. this is the second free upgrade I (will) have received from them.... THAT is the way to do business.

My problem is that RME has stopped supporting my card. In other words, they are not going to issue a 64 bit driver. Really pisses me off actually. So, to go 64, I have to upgrade everything.
