ProFire 610 VS Onyx 820i VS FireWire Solo

I need help in deciding what audio interface or mixer I should get that uses fire wire for home studio recording. ProFire 610 VS Onyx 820i VS FireWire Solo. Which would be the best one to get? My senses are telling me to go with the ProFire 610.

without knowing your needs or your future possible needs there's no way for us to be able to really help.

I can say that the Onyx units have had driver problems in the past, and that some people had to resort to a 3rd party driver for them.

I own a profire 610, I use it with Sonar 8.5 and have had no problems whatsoever with it, I highly recommend it.

actually, "creating hip hop music" is not what I mean by 'knowing your needs"

I mean how many inputs you need, how many of them need to be mic pres what will you be recording at the same time?  guitar?  acoustic? electric? bass?  what are your recording needs?

Hip Hop uses mostly, if not all Sampled or Electronic instruments now. Very few Hip Hop Artists use live instruments. But,what would be very helpful if you let us know what gear you want to hook up to it (Keyboards etc).

FYI -- M-Audio Profire has had an outstanding issue for awhile now:

    http://forums.m-audio.com...ding-bug.-Not-accurate

For some folks, not a big deal, for others, it is.

To the OP -- Does it have to be Firewire?  If so, you need to be absolutely sure you have a compatible FW chipset/controller (and with a laptop, it gets trickier).

With a good FW connection, a lot of folks are successfully using the Focusrite and Presonus units.  (The Dice II chipset is really no longer an issue now that drivers have matured.  Latencies are a bit higher, though, if that matters to you).

Don't know what you have against USB interfaces, but the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra or one of the Roland Capture series (Quad should be out soon) is generally known to work well with Sonar.

There are many others, of course, but I tried to stay within the same budget line of the others you mentioned.

*EDIT:  I just noticed the date of the original post. I'm guessing the OP has made his purchase by now... I really should pay more attention to these post dates!

I hope they have.  but I don't have mackie on my soundcard recommendation list on my website because of the drivers.

I love mackie for mixers - I have one.  their speakers are good.  not their drivers for soundcards.
