May be a dumb question, but.........
I am going to move my Seagate external hard drive to my new DAW computer, will anything be lost on this drive when I unplug the USB cable to make the move? The drive is partitioned with all Sonar project files, and lots of samples on it. Going from XP to Windows 7. Thanks!

shouldn't be a problem. just either unplug it while the computer is off, or use the USB safe unload option. BTW - I think I remember asking this before but what part of TN are you in? I grew up in east TN (go VOLS!)

Thanks, Beagle. I'm in Nashville. I have several pals that are from the Knoxville/Sweetwater/ Chattanooga area. They all played in different bands up there in the hills. Thanks again for the help. Milt.

I used to work on "Lower Broadway" as the amp tech in a music store (Little Roy Wiggins Music City) in the early 70's. I see the Opry is having their reopening tonight.

The drive is partitioned with all Sonar project files, and lots of samples on it. Nothing should be lost, but that does not necessarily mean that your new installation of Sonar etc. on Windows 7 will necessarily know how to find everything. Check to see what drive letter XP has assigned to your USB drive. On your new Win 7 computer, go to storage management and make sure Win 7 assigns the same drive letter to the USB drive. If there are multiple partitions on the USB drive each partition should be set to match the old drive letter for that partition. It might work fine without this step, but if file locations are referenced by anything stored in project or saved setups for samplers etc. by their old locations there is a potential problem if the drive letters change.

You'll have to reinstall the apps in the new computer.... and in the process....It will likely want to rewrite the sample libraries anyway. I just migrated all my stuff to a new computer... I also had the libraries installed on the external drive... but when I went to reinstall the application Komplete.... and selected the custom install, it still wanted to know where to install the libraries.... it did not (that I saw) give me the option just to tell it where to look. So this time, I installed the libraries on my internal 1TB drive. I use the external for backup and storage. Matter of fact...I need to Image my new C drive... sounds like a project for tonight. Been putting it off until I got it set up right, I think it's set up & working now.... now... where did I put that Acronis Disk?

Thanks for the replies, guys! You are all a BIG help! My plan right now is to move all the project and sample files from my external to the larger of the two drives in my new computer, then formatting the external and use it for backup and storage. I'm sure I will be posting back with some questions. Thanks again!

Just a thought but I would not hurry to erase that external drive until you stuff is backed up onto 2 drives at least. Why not just leave it as is as a backup?

but when I went to reinstall the application Komplete FWIW, With Komplete you can choose to not install the sample libraries. Then, once install is finished, you point each app to its associated library (which can be copied over from external HD/etc). This can literally save hours of install time when migrating.
