Dual monitors

Whew...It's been a while............. I'm looking to setup a second monitor and would like some hints, tips or comments on doing this.
Perhaps some pictures of your setup.. I know there's a way to have track view on one screen and maybe PRV on the other.

Thanks

    dual monitors are great!

first thing you need is a video card with dual video heads.  2nd thing you need is 2 monitors.

the dual head video card will have software to help you set it up.  I have mine set up so that the screen on the left is the main one and the one on the right is an extension of the desktop.

I guess the next question is can I "float" views with MC4?   I hope so.......

haha - welcome to the club!

I was "killed" just 2 days ago when I bought another keyboard.  hey!  it was less than $1000 this time! :-)

I don't think you can separate track and console views in MC or SHS7

but you can stretch the MC window across both screens and you can float several windows like the track view, the PRV, Staff view, etc.

My video card on the new DAW is a dual head card.... but I have become used to working like I do, so for now.... no big deal....

One day I will take the monitor from my biz machine and hook it up just for grins....... but another thing is, I don't have the room in my current studio space for 2 monitors.

And if I can't have console in one and track view in the other... why bother.

I guess the next question is can I "float" views with MC4?   I hope so.......

In MC4, you may be able to float the Console View outside the main window.
PRV, Staff, Synth Rack, and Track view will be trapped in the main window.
MC4 is derived from SHS6, which does have this ability.
As Reece mentioned, it has been disabled in SHS7 and MC5.
Open the Console View, and right click on the header. Select Enable Floating, if it is available.
The alternative, which isn't bad, is to stretch the main window across both screens.
I'll do that sometimes, to get a broader view of the Track View.
I rarely open the Console, preferring to work in the Track View, but this is entirely a matter of personal choice.
I generally keep the main view confined to the left screen. Track View, Transport, and tuner (G-Tune)reside here.
All VSTi's and effects go to the right screen.
VoxengoSPAN (plugged into the master bus), is always prominently displayed on the right screen.
I've been working this way on the desktop PC for a few years. I had to work with a single screen on the laptop recently, and felt very claustrophobic. I don't think I can ever go back.

ps: New keyboard, Reece? Glad the "killing" wore off. You do realize, we will have to come up with a diversionary cover, if we ever go to the big GC in Arlington

yep - I bought a digital piano with weighted keys CASIO PX-3 - a stage piano, actually.  the action on it is awesome - very similar to a real piano.  but the sounds on it are kind of bad, so I run it thru my motif or thru kontakt instead of listening to the piano sounds it has.

ah - I didn't realize the GC in arlington was bigger than the one in Ft. Worth!  now you've got me thinking up diversionary tactics!  sounds like we need a road trip!

Wow. When I lived in Dallas, there was just the 1 small one on Spring Valley and the Parkway. Just before I left, they opened a bigger store up on 75,
Now there are 3 in DFW? The musical instrument business must be booming.

I might be missing something here (wouldn't be the first time for me ) but I'm thinking that what keneds is looking to do is to have output on his two monitors, with, for example, track view on monitor one and console view on monitor two?  If this is the case, then what I did was to drag the main window across to the second monitor, select Window/Tile In Rows, which gave me two open views.  I then dragged console across to the second monitor.  I then drag the vst and soft synths onto whichever is the less cluttered monitor.  Of course, being an absolute noob, I may have misread the post.

Ahem ... just noticed that this thread has nothing to do with Sonar 8.5.  Suppose I should've checked the thread header rather than rely on the search function.  Dunno anything about Mucous Creator.

One of the reasons that computers are more convenient because the screens are always cheaper. video hardware that drives them is also more convenient than ever. Microsoft realized that when it released Windows 98, and built in support for multiple monitors. This ongoing support 98SE, 2000 and ME. If you are using NT, you are lucky, but this article will not help you.
