Disable EMU audio but keep MIDI?
I am running Sonar Producer 8.5.3 on a Vista platform with 2 sound cards. One is my Allen & Heath ZED R16 firewire mixer and the other is an EMU 1212m sound card. The EMU audio in/out's are not used or connected to anything. This card is only used for MIDI in/out. I would like to disable the audio portion and the Patch Mix software but keep the function of the MIDI in/out. If I disble the driver in Windows device manager it greatly helps reduce my latency on the ZED using ASIO but I loose my MIDI function. Any ideas?

Hi Bret I have an EMU 121M but I dont think you can do what you suggest. Its all or nothing I think. Why not pull the 1212M from your system and get yourself a very simple USB type MIDI interface (eg 1 IN 1 OUT) for very little money and just use that. I am sure it wont alter your latency performnace at all.

+1 to Jeff's suggestion. pull the EMU out and buy a USB/MIDI cable.

+1 again - $40 - 50$ should do it.

Like the Cakewalk UM-2G? Low latency and I could connect both a keyboard and my E Drums?

Well, I pulled the EMU 1212m and installed the UM_2G today. Seems to work great. No more swapping cables and a lower latency on my audio.

I'm wondering why having the EMU 1212m sound card in your system affects the latency of the ZED R16. Anybody with an idea about this? Bill B.

My guess was that the DSP sound software is running parallel to the other sound card (ZED) and slowed the overall process down. Just a guess. I noticed improved latency when disabling the EMU driver but I had lost my MIDI function. My current latency using ASIO at 44.1 and buffers at 256 results in "Total Roundtrip" = 14.4msec, 633 samples. Still not great, but workable.
