SM58 Converted to Omni

If I take a Sure SM58 remove the pop filter and wrap tape over the vents near the threads, won't this convert this mike to omni?  I was thinking of using this for room measurements.

    No.

You'll just have a crappy sounding sm58 with a really messed up off axis frequency response.

Look at the difference between the cardioid pattern and the omni pattern. They really aren't similar at all.

the Behringer ECM8000 is not very expensive - less than an SM58.

You may be able to turn it into an omni... but it's not so useful as a room mic because it has a tailored frequency response that will probably not be flat enough to make useful room readings.

I use a $99 dbX test mic and hope to send it off and get a calibration file to use with my RTA someday.

    best regards,
    mike

Technicaly the frequency response of the mic is irrelevant as long as you know what it is.  You just match the displayed response on the RTA with the known response of the mic.

Obviously this is easier the flatter the mic response.

    :-)

I use True RTA which will utilize a mic calibration file to correct for frequency response issues.
