EQ How-to videos

Check out the first two videos on this page. It's by FabFilter and demonstrates the Pro-Q plugin, but the techniques are applicable to any parametric equalizer.

Hi Bit, and thanks for the link.  The 1st video sort of addresses the question I posted in the “Getting the frequency balance right” thread.

Just to solicit your opinion (in reference to your comments in the “Getting the frequency balance right” and essentially re-phrasing my previous question from that same thread) …

If you wanted to manage the bass content of your mix to optimize the effect of your limiter, is there any benefit to eq’ing in the mix stage versus eq’ing in the pseudo-mastering stage?

For example (and I guess a bit of an over simplification but I think you'll get the point of my question) apply a 40 Hz cut-off on the bass drum and bass guitar tracks in the mix vs. a 40 Hz cut on the final mix before the limiter.

Lance: Pro-Q has become my first-choice equalizer, replacing my previous favorite (GlissEQ) 90% of the time. The UI is what sets it apart. I'm just able to dial in the right correction/enhancement much more quickly than with any other plugin. It's also gentler on the CPU. GlissEQ won't be going away, though, as it has features that FabFilter doesn't. I'm glad I have both. (BTW, I still use the Sonitus EQ on occasion, too.)

I don't currently use the M/S features in FFPQ, but after watching the videos I think it's time to do some experimentation. I've had M/S EQ capabilities since Ozone 4, and it seemed uber-cool at first but in practice I've not actually found much use for it.

quantum: yes, you definitely want to apply your subsonic cuts before any compression or limiting. Another strategy for maximizing bass without causing problems in the limiter is to use a multiband compressor. This will let you apply different rules to the bass than to the rest of the spectrum, so that the other frequencies aren't attenuated when the bass triggers the compressor. I personally do not do this, but then my genre is classic rock, not techno/hiphop/dance.

They seem like very well made instructional videos... they emphasize technique rather than a bullet list of features.

    Great link!

I am a big fan of M/S low end control... I think I can easily hear the bass get more articulate after I have run the process in my finalizing stage.

    best regards,

Well Bit, you really scored high in my heart on this one.  Concerning the MS pearls ... they probably apply little to me since I record bass and kick in mono.

The videos allow wideness of the bass guitar(s), IIRC ... which I can understand above 100 Hz ... where their wavelengths become shorter than a foot.  The videos are also focused on 'pop' audience audio-acoustics and their PA or car systems.

Some other take home points for me:

    1) 100 Hz divides the subwoofer from bass.  Car systems, btw, seem to have the same conventions (i.e., front door woofers cut off at 100Hz)

    2) 1.5 Khz is dist guitars sweet spot

    3) Its always safe to widen dist guitars (albeit I prefer doing that in the mix)

    4) The 3.3 kHz range needs to be addressed with both vocs and the final mix.

    5) Complimentary EQing might attend each and every EQ adjustment

    6) Boxiness and bass-lines must be addressed with notches of the kick harmonics ... like at the 125 Hz area.

    7) Almost everything deserves an HPF

    8) Dist Guitar needs an LPF at 10 kHz +/-

    9) Vocs can be high shelved ... but above 10Hz sibs

    10) Female vocs (and kids) usu need notching starting at 3.3 to 3.5 kHz (Q=1) ... especially younger ones.

    11) Drastic HPFing of vocs (150 Hz +/-) seems helpful.

    12) Sweetening a mix will take place by EQing/complimentary EQing in the 2-3 kHz range.

Alan Parsons has a new DVD set out called The Art and Science of Sound Recording. It's pretty good. For me, coming up on my 4th year in this thing of ours, and having studied as much as time allows outside my double time job, there wasn't a lot that was news to me, but it was still worth getting.

Definitely for folks new to this area and setting up a home studio it's a good watch. There are three DVDs and they get into a lot of different areas at enough depth that it's not disoriented to a newcomer, but enough that it's not just fluff either. There were only a few misstatements in the DVDs that I saw, and they were minor enough that they weren't worth worrying about.

How much do you 'recommend' the AP DVD stuff to someone at your/my level?  (Note: I luv'd 80% of their 70's albums but there are so many new-school grooves out there for the taking!)

After watching the other FabFilter videos, my buy-finger has been hovering over the "Buy Now" button to get their Pro-C compressor. I never thought I'd ever consider paying $150 for a compressor, but they've managed the same level of UI magic on that product as they did with Pro-Q equalizer. And to make matters worse they now have a new limiter out, too.

The only reason I haven't bought it is the fear that as soon as I blow this month's fun budget, SONAR 9 will be announced the next day.
