Prob a simple question about synth drums...

hello... this is probably a simple question about synth drums.

I want to make my own drum/percussion sounds using softsynths like FM8 and Absynth.   I plan on mixing and matching from different synths.  Do I need to have a different track for each drum sound (like one for the snare, one for the kick, etc...) or can I put them all in one track and have each note go to a different synth?   I was reading up on drum maps, is that what this is used for?  I would like to see my drums all in one track so I can use step sequencer, you know?

Is this a common approach?  I can see myself having 5-10 synths just for electronic drums.

Thank You,
Adam

You can do it with drum maps and also directly in the step sequencer.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.
