In MC, Options>Audio, make sure your sound card/interface is selected as both Recording and Playback Timing Masters. Make sure the sound card/interface's drivers are selected. In the Windows mixer, if applicable, make sure that whatever input you're using while recording (mic, line in, S/PDIF) is not muted and the input level is up. In MC, in an audio track, set the input to your sound card/interface. For monophonic instruments like guitar or microphone, that should be a mono input, usually the Left input. Click the R in the track to arm the track for recording. Does the level meter move?

I experienced the same issue..I never had this experience with 8.0. As soon as I upgraded to 8.5.2, once I arm a track for recording, the level meter will OFTEN no longer function. It works when I actually begin the recording process, but not while I'm just sitting there trying to SET levels. Just this morning, I experienced the issue where it would not record even though I was getting signal all the way through to my board. Finally, after rebooting and creating new track, etc...it started to record.

To both of you that are having the problems with recording..... What sound card are you using? If it is a laptop with a factory sound card.... that could very well be the problem. Be sure you are using the MME driver and follow what Greg said above. You should consider getting a dedicated audio interface to record your music.

Guitarhacker!! hey, my level meter is not moving or picking up! I tried pluging my guitar strait into the front of my laptop...nothing. But a real problem I am having is when I arm a track and record....it skipps ahead a few clicks, then repeatedly records a pop, pop, pop, pop sound. Not a metrenome click, but a crunchy pop sound. I've tried everything I can think of......and when I try to play anything I have recorded in the past (when I was using windows vista), it has the same pop sound...repeatedly, only a lot quieter??? Can you help me out?

Guitarhacker is at church. I know he's going to ask a few things, so I'll get the questions started. What operating system are you using? Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit OS? How much RAM does the computer have and how fast is it? What sound card are you using? In MC, Options>Audio, what driver mode are you using? What is listed for both recording and playback device? What is the I/O Buffers set at? How many buffers in the playback queue? What is the reported latency? What is the velocity of an unladen swallow? Oops, too much coffee. Anyway, this info will help Guitarhacker help you. Or any of us, for that matter.

as guitarhacker and greg both have asked, we need to know what soundcard you're using and what driver mode you're using it in. those answers unlock the secrets of the stuttering, clicking and popping.

ok. thats good info. but the stock soundcard and its drivers are going to be popping and stuttering. if you're already at the safe side, then the only possibility of getting the onboard soundcard to work is to download and install ASIO4ALL and change to ASIO driver mode. the best solution is to get a "recording" soundcard. check my website for some recommendations. and uh, "finally feedback" after 5 hours? give us a little time to be with our families, we can't stay on the forums 24 hours a day!

If W7 is the OS...I think you need to run it in 32 bit mode.... also the factory cards are crap. Not designed to use with MC or any good DAW software. On my Dell laptop, I have not been able to get the audio working with the built in card.... never, so I use my Saffire which is much better, but even when the Saffire in NOT connected and I change the settings the audio card does not work. So if you are getting clicks and pops, It is likely from the POC soundcard that the laptop manufacturers use.

Most forums I go to that are not here in the Cakewalk world, 24 hrs is considered a fast turn around for feedback on a question posted. I have posted on some and had to wait weeks literally to have someone reply. I have been in this forum where it was almost like a chat session the replies were coming so quickly. Beagle what do you mean you can't be here 24 hrs a day..... it's your responsibility to be checking in on this forum to catch all the questions in a timely manner.

Thanx guys.....I've been asking this 3 different forums, and it' taken weeks! You guys have been very puncual and helpful, and seen like you know what ur talking about. I have never come to this problem before now, but with what my laptop has been through the last year, I can see my soundcard going awal like this. I will try the asio thing now....hopefully that's it. I also have an Omega Lambda interface that I'm going to try to go through,,,,maybe that will do the trick, but no sign of sound from my meters is odd, and the click click click click (non metronome style) got me concerned. Thanx again for helpin me out guys....I'll use this forum again for sure!

Well, if you have a Lexicon (which is it, the Omega or the Lambda?) by all means use that. Do not download ASIO4All if you're going to use the Lex. If the Lex has drivers for Win 7, go to the Lexicon website and download/install those drivers. They should have good ASIO drivers, thus you won't need the ASIO4All thing.

That's the most common sound you get from those cards using DAWs. About that "ASIO-thing": Note that ASIO4ALL which often works with integrated soundchips, is not at all the same thing as the actual ASIO-drivers, which you should use with your Lexicon.
