The guides at tweakheadz.com are also good.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

There are beginners guides that are pretty good on the DVD that comes with the monthly Computer Music MAgazine.

Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki. The chapter on compressors is a highlight. Not as technical but a pleasant read and a gentle introduction: Sound FX by Alexander Case.

bitflipper Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki. The chapter on compressors is a highlight. +1 Great explanation on dynamic manipulation (so compressors, limiters, expanders, gates etc). Highly recommended.
