How to get full blown Sound Center?
Sound Center ships with MC5 but seems to be missing instruments. How does one get the complete Sound Center? Thanks.

The only way is to buy the boxed version.

Hmm... some of the literature suggests that Sound Center is expandable. There are tons of expansion packs at the Cakewalk store, but they don't mention SC as one of the target synths; just the other soft synths Cakewalk produces or distributes. That might be worth looking into and I'm certain that someone else will provide more info later.

Greg, I do have the boxed version and like I say, it has placeholders for a lot of instruments but only some of them are actually there. I thought Studio Instruments would supply them but it doesn't.

I think there was a discussion on this some time back..... and the result was that SS does have place holders for more stuff, but nothing that Cake currently sells will work in SS. Perhaps they put the place holders there with the intention of creating some new add-on packs later. In the meantime, you can but Dimension LE and the Garritan Pocket Orchestra (GPO) from cake to increase your sounds with a new synth. DimLE & GPO on sale for $49 now.... regular price is $99 It is advantageous to look at the store/products on a regular basis IF you are looking for more stuff to make noise .... since they do tend to run some really sweet specials from time to time..... like the time they ran this same package of DimLE/GPO for $20...... oh yeah..... that's the one I got.... but even at $49 that's a 50% OFF sale. Grab it. You gotta check the store because that do not announce these specials to the world. Occasionally when someone sees a good special, they will post it here or in the software forum. You gotta keep your eyes open and move quick because the specials do not last.

AFAIK you cannot get the full soundcenter "expansion pack" unless you buy the boxed version. the download version comes with 50 sounds (you did get THOSE, right?) the boxed version comes with 150 sounds. Cakewalk Sound Center Expansion Pack 150 instrument sounds 50 instrument sounds

actually that's DimPRO and Rapture for only $99. DimPro used to be $250 by itself! and in addition to that, Studio Instruments is downloadable for $19. you already have SI drums, but the full studio instruments comes with bass, piano and violin sounds and midi loops. DimLE and Garritan Pocket Orchestra is available for $49 download. Session Drummer 2 is $10 square 1 is free download I think these are all "monthly specials" and might not be that price starting Nov1.

I have the boxed version and it has a lot of the instruments, but not all. For example, I click on Oboe or French Horn and nothing is listed. I have an email into customer support.

I thought you meant you had the DL version and wanted the other 100 instrument sounds. In any case, I think I remember reading last night that SC is based on the Dimension sound engine, so those listings are probably artifacts left over from the crippling of Dimension. The names are there but not the sound files. If you have 150 instrument sounds, then you have the full Sound Center.

Seems odd that they would list instruments on the menu but not have anything there. And I've installed this a few times so don't think it's an installation issue. I will let you know what Cakewalk tells me.

Seems odd that they would list instruments on the menu but not have anything there. That's so you'll want them and order Dimension LE or Pro. It's the same with some of the Help files; they sometimes mention instruments, effects or features that were available in the mother programs but not in the version you have.

when I click on oboe in Soundcenter there is nothing there. same for bassoon, other reed, other woodwind...several are like that. it's just a category that we didn't get with soundcenter.

maybe they had planned to add these and ran out of time before the release, or they plan to add these at a later date to sell an add on pack.....or...... just to get you chompin at the bit to buy more sounds from the other bigger synths now.... either way, there are good sounding samples out there to fill the need for a bassoon, if you really need one. For a long time I used SFZ and went looking for the free samples at KRV audio and other places.... google search free sound fonts and look around. That's what I used a lot of before I bought the bigger expensive synths I now have. There are quiet a few really nice sounding FREE fonts out there... you just gotta poke around and find them. I have not tried the links recently on my web site link page but that is a good place to start. they still work: http://www.kvraudio.com/g...bsp; and http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/ that's 2... there are more online. I would think that they probably planned to release some expansion packs for sale and just never got around to it. but it's all speculation. they're not there and that's normal.

Did you try the one in TTS-1? See if you can download Proteus VX from www.creative.com if it's still free. All those sounds are pretty good to my ears. May not work well in Vista. Don't know about Win 7.

Greg, now you've taken me down a different road....I created a TTS-1 track and am playing my Casio Keyboard through it and getting lots of good sounds, although the mapping has changed. In other words, what would be trumpet on the Casio is now flute.....The TTS-1 screen is set to Piano 1. Are there other instruments hidden in there?

Greg, I am looking through your tutorials and getting schooled a little in this midi game. Simple question: My Casio #12 is organ, but in TTS-1 it is marimba. I set the bank somewhat randomly to 128, since it was labelled User Normal 1 (and I am sort of a normal user). How would I determine the complete listing of instruments? (without maually going thru my Casio selections?) One of your tutorials shows that, but I don't see it on my MC5.

I believe your Casio has some proprietary banks, and you need instrument definitions if you want Cakewalk to play MIDI tracks using the Casio sounds. I don't believe support for that is supported in MC5. I seem to recall seeing a way around that, but I'm not sure. TTS-1 used the General MIDI 2 Patch/Bank selection. This is a standardized set, and the following article shows a complete listing of banks and patches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI_Level_2 Note, the patch numbers are off by one, because the GM patch numbers start at 1, but TTS-1 starts at 0. This is fairly common, and it has to do with software implementation. hth

Right. It seems like your Casio is mapped differently than General MIDI. If you have the keyboard's manual, it probably has a list of how it's mapped. If you have no manual, you can probably find one on the internet. So you select patch #18 on the Casio and that's a flute, for instance, but in the GM Standard, patch 18 might be church organ. My Yamaha isn't exactly GM-mapped; there are some slight variations, like more organs and some patches with effects that GM doesn't have. But if I go up the list, I have the GM patches in a different place if I want to use them. Check out Guitarhacker's web site. Lots of good info on TTS-1 there.

Here is the pertient part of the response from Cakewalk: Thank you for contacting Cakewalk. We apologize for the long delay. Unfortunately, we have no expansion packs for Soundcenter at this time. Please keep an eye on our Store for new updates and releases.

the missing instruments. Well, if you have 150 instruments, none are missing. That's the limit with Sound Center, and the only way to get more than 150 instruments is to purchase Dimension. How many instruments do you have that play?
