19" DAW insulation?

I have built a DAW (Core i7 920) which has a cheap 19" rack in steel. (cost = 45$)
It does not have any vibration reduction/sound insulation (such as rubber suspension etc)

It does have noticeable noise, Ive located this to the PSU.
(this will be replaced asap)

Is there any point/possibility to make this less noisy?
Is there any insulation I can put on the inside of the case?

There is no other fans than the CPU fan (cpu temp is about 50 degrees Celcius under idle, 62 under "full load")

My plan would be to have a few more (silent) fans, since it also has 5 HDD's so I can improve the airflow.

Hope there is some other DAW builder which have used a 19" rack, sharing their experiences.
I know the rack computers have a poorly airflow compared to a "regular" case, but in my micro studio there was no room for another solution

5gig ram? not right... sets of 3 only.
you need silent case fans, silent cpu fan good quiet power supply
for noise reduction foam try quiet pc.
surprised you are not having issues with that mobo and the PCIe card.

Actually, the mobo has 6 slots of ram, and I've put in 5 x 1GB

I cant see that silent case fans will help (I dont have a fan now)
I think also my 5 HDD setup is noisy (cant check this thogh)

Hopefully the replace of the PSU will help - and the CPU fan is supposed to be quiet.

I'll try to check out "quiet pc", I hope they have something I can put at the walls or something

Im actually suprised also, the mobo works.
(did get it pretty cheap - and was expecting to return in as a DOA after reading in different forums etc. Have worked fine since day 1!)
The only bad thing is that it is not compatible with 4GB ram sticks.

yes well aware the board has 6 slots
on an X58 platform memory should be installed in sets of 3 ONLY.
with 5 sticks you are running single channel ram.
4 will give you dual channel, 3 (or 6) will give you TRIPLE channel ram which is the CORRECT way.

no case fans? you are asking for massive heat issues.

you can unplug all your HDDs to see if thats the noise.
having your OS in raid 0 is also bad.
sounds like you have a lot of older HDDs which could very well be part of the noise issue.

OK - I'll check the triple ram thing.
I think "speccy" reports it as triple channel though, I though maybe 3 of them was triple channel and the 2 others is single channel?

about case fans - I though so also but the i7 920 cpu is at highest 65 degress Celcius (under load)
That would not be massive heat issues? Or?

I'll try to unplug the HDDs - I have 2 Velociraptors (from 2009) and 2 80GB WD (2009 also) discs. And a 7200rpm Seagate (I think it is) which might be older.

About the raid0 as systemdisc - the DAW is daily backed up and can be "easily" be restored. But the system will be replaced with a SSD or a Velociraptor as soon as possible (economy)

I'm using an Antec "ninehundred" case for my home built system.  It sits under my computer console (open for air flow) and has lots of case fans as this was designed as a "gamer" case.  It has one fan on the rear, two in the front and one on top, along with my power supply fan, the CPU cooling fan and the Video card fan.  It is not noisy and I've recorded a singer within 4 ft of the PC and it did not interfere with the recordings.  The lead in on the voice tracks are perfectly quiet.

You can quiet your current system quite a bit with parts from these guys: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/index.html.

They have a good selection of quiet power supplies and video cards, and they offer case insulation, too. They may not always have the lowest price, but you can compare with Newegg.com and others, once you find what you want. (Then again, they offer a lot of valuable information and support, and that's usually worth a couple extra dollars.)

glad to hear you back it up. with that type of redundancy you are fine with it...
