Sonar won't record-Solved!

This has to be a new one. For some reason, Sonar will not record. Everything is set up, The levels appear when I set them in the meter, I hit the record and my signal won't print. I've tried restarts even with shutting it all the way off.

I did have a BSOD though. The event viewer (Win 7 64 bit - critical error event ID 41 kernel power - task (63)). I've been looking this one up and it seems that a lot of people are having this issue. I've had the BSOD before and have never had problems with Sonar before. Other than forgetting to hit my button for CTRL+S.

At a loss here.

How big is your power supply? It may not be able to handle 3 hard drives with the I7 and so much memory. You should have a 750 to 1000W ps for that much hardware. Disconnect one of the drives (not the system drive) and see if that resolves the problem.

I've seen this happen when trying to start a new recording at the END of a track, but all the other tracks have already ended.  I run into this often.   It happens randomly.

Other reasons, as I suspect you know, are improper "input" setting.  Or Loop points being set to the same value (or within the same measure).

Don't know if any of that helps, but if it does, good; if not, maybe it'll set you in the right direction to figure it out.

It's also possible the project got corrupt (that's happened to me too) and it simply needs to be started over.  A simple check is to start a new project and see if it records as expected.

I think it may the corrupt project. I did start new and it would record.

It's a 650w power supply.

Definitly has to be a corrupt file. I've tried both 64 and 32 bit versions. I can record new projects but the one I'm working on is buggered.

Anyway to get it back?

If the project is corrupt, it's either a wave file or the cwp file, the latter being the more likely. If that's the case, the only way to salvage the project would be to import all your audio and MIDI files into a new project. Unless it's a very simple project, that's not a trivial task!

If it's a corrupt wave file, you should be able to determine which one it is by deleting tracks one at a time until the project starts working correctly again.

I've never heard of a corrupt picture cache causing problems like this but I suppose it's possible. In any case I'd start by deleting the picture cache just to assure starting with a clean slate.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'll try that Bit. Thanks.

It would be a lot of work to move as you said. It's not a money project and everything is there. I just wanted to re-record the leads because I used a thick pick and there is this high pitch noise that happens occasionally due to the thick pick.

I'll see what happens.

That may not be enough. I tried using 3 drives on my system and I started getting corrupted files and BSODs and I finally realized it was the power supply. I've replaced the 3rd internal drive with an external drive. This may not be your problem, but it might be something you want to keep in mind if the problems continue.

That was it! I have no idea how it got turned on though. I never use it.

Daveny, it looks like the power problem may be a windows issue. I would hate to buy a new PSU and it still happen. I'm keeping an eye on the boards for that issue though. I'll have to wait and see. Maybe one of the resident builders can chime in on that issue?

Regarding power supply --  I have 3 internal SATA drives and a SATA DVD burner internally as well.   I've been running a 500w power supply and my system is very stable.   I think your 650w is probably ok.

As for the autopunch - it probably was a keybinding you hit on and didn't realize it.   That's the catch-22 with keybindings -- it's easy to type one not realizing it will take affect or has.

I figured that's what I did was hit some kind of hot key. I never look at my keyboard when I type so anythings possible. Especially with my big hands.

I was thinking my PSU was plenty also. Before I had Win7 64, I had no issues of this whatsoever in XPpro. As I said before, I saw a lot of stuff on other boards about this. It's probably something in the OS that Microsoft hasn't figured out yet.

On the large tranzport, there is an auto punch toggle right underneath the now time. If your at the beginning of the track, it will be all zeros.
