I think I understand why it is X1 now

Sonar 9...   ?    Did you think Cakewalk knew [about any other DAW names] before they came up with X1?

of the zillion threads elsewhere (and even here in software), I've yet to read a numbers similarity.

I'm thinking Roman Numerals IX is 9. To make it more interesting they swapped the letters to XI or X1 more appropriately. Or.......Greg wanted to make it seem like breaking the DAW sound barrier and named it X1 like the first jet.

Let's all jump in with a conspiracy theory.

How bout just cuz they thought it sounded cool?... =P Too simple? Or that it's the first in a new generation of SONAR. I suppose it's just open to interpretation xD

My first association was with another DAW, called Energy XT, I was prompted to it by my hardware manufacturer, for example at this page

    http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UCA202.aspx

I did not install this program again after I reinstalled Windows earlier this year (before Sonar Home Studio XL installation).

I thought of Energy XT again, as I noted Sonar X1 presents navigator view of everything-on-the-bench ierarchy view of tracks, plugins, synths, etc in a way I earlier noted at Energy XT

Yes. Maybe X1 just sounds nice and is a good way to represent / reflect  a new start for the brand. :-)

I assumed it was XI because that's 11 in Roman numerals.
It gets released at end of this year, so effectively it's main use will be throughout 2011.

X1 is not Roman numerals at all.

Roman numeral for 11 is actually XI (ex eye)

Notice the letter"I" not the number "1"

So its called SONAR "ex one"

Cake mods have already discussed this in another thread.
