going backward and loving it

I made a decision to take my [4 core, 64 bit system, running Windows 7 64 bit, and do a clean install changing everything back to 32 bit.

I did a reinstall of every old app, some "Cake" and some "not so much". (I was missing so many of my trusted old programs) I started with some of my Cake software as far back as Sonar 3.

I know that most of you are going to say this is stupid, as I have given up almost half of my RAM, but heck, we used to do a lot with three gigs of Ram.

One great benefit ........................ everything works, and I haven't spent one minute trying to get some driver to cooperate with some other driver. No more program errors. And no more "bridged" programs that only marginally work.

P5 runs like a scalded dog, and does everything I could ever want it too. Not only that, but now I have access to all of my Sony editing tools and effects.

I also find that Sonar 6, runs much better than Sonar 8.5, and I get the added benefit of Rewire. (I really missed using that)

I may purchase the new Sonar X1 in the following months, but I won't install it on this machine. I am going to consider this my bread and butter DAW, and buy a new rig to run Sonar X1 or any other 64 bit apps on, including the OS.

PS: I really do miss the group, as I'm pretty sure most of you have moved on. And I may be posting this to an empty forum.

Have a really great day .....................

    I'm still here!

I've got an old P4 32bit Xp system and I built a new Core i7 64bit Win7 system last year.  The 64bit system has Sony Vegas x64 version, as well as my graphics software suites, but I haven't installed any Cakewalk software on it yet.  The Vegas performance is amazing and I have not run into any glitches at all with it.  But the Cakewalk SONAR is so much more hybrid 32bit/64bit with its bundled software rather than being 100% 64bit native that I haven't wanted to fight with it yet.  I wish it could as smooth as Vegas but there is a lot more involved than was with Vegas.

Hey Bob, glad you're still hanging around.
I love Sony software and have been a fan of Soundforge for ever and a day. I use it often and love most of the plugs. I've considered Vegas on several occasions, but don't know if I have any use for all of the high end video stuff. I did notice some glitches in Soundforge when running it under Windows 64.
It's all the crappy little synths that I have collected over the years, and I still love using soundfonts, but was just having too many issues running at 64 bit.
All of the Sonar software worked fine, it's just that I couldn't give up my "blankey" just yet.
I'm just going to forgo the Ram downsize for now.

I thought W7 64bit runs 32 bit applications in 32bit mode like I have set up on my machine. Still there seems to be some value going back to the way it was, good luck!

It does, and that is how I had my system running, but there are quite a few plugs and synths that just won't work correctly.

Besides I still like using Rewire across some of my apps, and that is just not possible in Win 7, 64 bit.

That's news to me that rewire won't work on W7 64bit. I was planning on installing Reason soon to work with P5....

If it works, then I must be missing something, because the options aren't even available on my system.

Rewire works in Win7 X64, but only in 32-bit hosts like P5 or SONAR 32-bit.

There is a benefit, actually, in using a 32-bit host in a 64-bit OS versus using a 32-bit host in a 32-bit OS, and that is being able to use a full 4gigs of RAM.
