Duplicate "Ghost" Track
Using Sonar Producer 8.5 on Win7 64-bit, I came across an interesting little issue last night. I have a stereo track called "Shaker" which just has the sound of a shaker on it. Somehow, while working, a second track called "Shaker" suddenly appeared alongside the original. This has no audio in it at all. If I delete it, the original track is deleted too. I've archived it, so it's not causing me any problems, but I just wondered if anyone else has seen this issue, and if so, whether there's a known cause or workaround. Cheers, Martin

Call an exorcist... No one else has reported this problem so its probably something you did. What type of track is the ghost track (MIDI, Audio, softsynth...)?

That's a new one, Martin. I have, however, accidentally deleted tracks before. I select a track for deletion and don't notice that there is another track selected, too.

Martin, You might consider making a copy of the original track, and then delete the other (and it's ghost) just to tidy things up a bit. Brian

I created the audio track by rendering a software synth to audio. I'll try copying and deleting, to see if that works. I certainly might have created the copy by accident, but the oddity is in the way the two tracks seem to be "entangled", so if I delete the ghost the real track gets deleted too. The ghost appeared when I was in the process of organizing tracks into track folders, by dragging them around. Perhaps I hit a key on the keyboard by accident when I was dragging things, and created a copy somehow. Cheers, Martin

It seems like there is an audio/midi connection going on. How did you reneder the audio track? Brian

My buddy who is using 8.0 ran into an issue of ghost tracks showing up, I posted here and no one had heard of it either. He then brought his incredibly HUGE project over my house on a bundle file. I uploaded, played around with it and ran into several of the bugs he described that no one seemed to hear of. (including myself) 1) ghost track appearing 1-a When I delete the ghost track, it actually deletes a 'random' track but keeps the ghost track (This was duplicated over and over and over and over) /queue banging head on desk 2) As soon as the ghost track appeared you could no longer 'save' as you got the "disk is full error" ..The ghost track was related to this disk is full error in some crazy illogical way. Not sure if you have the same problem but my buddy would sure be happy that someone else has run into the same weird things that he has! I could not figure out what is going on but his project contains well over 100 tracks and if you count track layers in some places it is as high as 500+ tracks. I don't know if your project is as large and maybe once you hit a certain limit with Sonar weird things begin to happen. I have never experienced these things before either until my buddy brought his project over to my house. Of course, I have never seen a project so big either. If you figure out what it is, please post and let us know. -Mike

Cheers, Martin I see you said you recorded the shaker part by using a softsynth. Did you insert it as a "SIT" (simple instrument track)? That MIGHT explain what's going on. For instance, if you then turned the SIT into a 'regular' midi+synth track (non-SIT), you would think you're seeing a duplicate. This may not be what happened, but I'm just throwing it out as a possibility.

While I haven't had TOO many corrupted project files over the years, they DO happen. And, Sonar/Windows isn't always capable of telling us when that happens :(

Thanks Billy, I've been wondering if that could indeed be the case (file corruption). ..and if so, if it is track specific or project specific

LpMike75 Thanks Billy, I've been wondering if that could indeed be the case (file corruption). ..and if so, if it is track specific or project specific I think it depends .... some corruption may affect only a track or tracks; but the 'cwp' file itself can get corrupt at times, so it's hard to know. Only experimenting with deleting/fixing tracks can determine that, I think. BUT if the CWP file itself is corrupt on disk, doing anything to the project may simply make matters worse. It's best to work on 'copies' of the project just to be safe.
