Loud Buzzing Static

Hi Folks, I'm new to forum but I:ve been reading some of the posts as a visitor.  My problem sounds similar but not quite the same as some others.  I have Music Creator 5 in a cheap Toshiba lap top with Windows 7 32 bit and a M Audio Fast Track Pro with downloaded Asio drivers.  Sometimes it works great.  Other times I get a gret deal of what sounds like static and the level meter shows about halfway up from just the background noise.  Also if you try to put any sound through it at these times the notes come out very loud and distorted no matter how low you dial down your input volumes.  Any ideas?

    MORE DETAILS...please.

Tell us what you are doing. Working on audio or midi. Is the static constant of intermittent. Is it isolated to a specific track.... can you mute that track and make it go away....

Are you sure a knob isn't turned up somewhere that you are overlooking....

I had a similar thing happen.... I heard a low level hiss, and my system is usually very quiet. Come to find out I had left the amp level up after I disconnected my guitar.....

The problem is intermittent. I've been recording bass and drum tracks to acompany my act.  I'm using the Si drum software but doing the bass on my keyboard as audio.  And acoustic guitar scratch tracks in audio.  Doesn't seem to matter what track your in.

Next time it happens, note the CPU reading in the bottom right.
Are any other programs running? Scheduled tasks like automatic disk derfagmenting or virus scan? Screen saver and wallpaper off? Microsoft system sounds off?
Are you using the Amplitube amp simulator?

My virus scan my be activating.  Are you saying to disable the factory sound card?  I didn't know I had to turn all these things off.  What should I be looking for at the CPU % down in the corner?  I have not been using the amplitube.  I'm only laying down acoustic chords for scratch tracks.

No, you don't necessarily have to disable the onboard sound card.
Let me see if I can find the item...
Okay, Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds>Sound Scheme>select no sounds.
This will prevent things like "You've Got Mail" or other sounds that the computer might make, from interupting recording or playback, robbing the CPU of resources and potentially making noise.
If the computer is downloading updates for one of your programs, this could also cause loss of processor power and could lead to noise or total audio dropouts.
The CPU reading while recording or playback will vary with the computer model, RAM, etc. Typically for me, with 4-10 audio tracks going and maybe 2 or 3 audio effects or soft synths, the max CPU usage it reports is in the 25-30% range.
When doing serious recording, I get off the internet, disable my modem, turn off the virus scan and any other program that might steal RAM.
