Automation in a soft synth

I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of automation and have a couple of questions. 
1) Unlike audio tracks, instrument tracks do not appear to have envelopes available when you right click in the clips pane.  Can you create volume and pan envelopes for inserted soft synths using envelopes?
2) To create the automation using faders, you can do this in the console pane by enabling automation for the track and then (for example) moving the volume slider.  However how can I display the results of this automation so I can edit it if needed?
