COMPUTER ADVICE

hello...Currently have a Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop with Intel i5, 4gbRAM,500gb HD, 2.27ghz,5400rpm...Question is..Id like to use the V100 studio with Producer 8.5 and X1.I mainly record blues with roughly 20 tracks, not many synth backing parts.Would this computer work.I ran the DPC test and it worked as long as my LAN wireless was off.I will only be  using this computer  for music production.Any help or advice appreciated.Im coming off of a Tascam 16 track analog and an Akai dps16, so this is all new to me.Thanks

Unless you encounter someone on these forums with experience using that Toshiba laptop, you're essentially on your own and it's trial and error. If you have a low DPC latency with WiFi off, that's a good sign that the V100 studio could work well with Sonar.

One thing you should definitely consider is upgrading to a 7200 rpm drive - however, for what you will be doing, that system should do fine as-is.  If you do upgrade the drive, throw your old one into a little USB drive adapter case and use it for backups.

When purchasing a new computer, be sure to pickup a new USB keyboard and optical mouse from Xoxide. You can also find a nice selection of computer speakers that will bring the best out of your new sound card. And do not install extra unusable software when you purchase new computer.

Your Toshiba should be just fine to run the studio, but definitely invest in a good external drive and put all your data on that instead of on your laptop hard drive. Just install SONAR on the laptop hard drive, run msconfig and disable everything and restart. That gives you a clean startup. Don't go online with this computer. Just plug your external hd into a desktop and download whatever files you need to, then move it back to your laptop and you should be in good shape. Max out the RAM always. If upgrading your hd is an option, by all means do. In your system properties/advanced section, make sure you set your preferences to "best performance" vs. "best appearance" or "let Windows choose...".

That should help significantly. And, as always, just make sure your PC's specs exceed the minimum version of the software's requirements. It doesn't have to be the "recommended version", but should be well above the minimum requirements....

    Good luck!

You didn't mention the OS.... or I missed it. If the computer is just going to be a lappy DAW..... reinstall the OS...Vista has a "return to factory" setting..... it lets you start fresh. Then reinstall the software you need and want and nothing else.

I keep my new DAW off the internet and don't even have AV on it.

The only nit I see is the 5400 rpm drive.  7200 is preferred for faster seek times. 20 audio tracks should be a breeze especially with few synths and FX.

    Sounds like a cool plan.

If you want to buy a computer or laptop, it is important to know about the model and the configurations of it which you want to buy. Now a days there are so many products  and different  companies are available in the market.

One little annoying feature I could've lived without is the volume buttons' system beep. These touch-sensitive buttons (located on the top right corner of the keyboard) are very responsive, but by default they produce a very annoying system beep every time one or the other is touched. I found through the Sound settings in Control Panel an option that let me turn that off which improved my experience with the volume buttons 100%. Before, sometimes after holding the + or - button for a few second, I guess because the annoying system beep itself was glitchy, it'd get "stuck" and would continue to beep even after I let go... That's resolved now that I turned off the system beep associated with it. The touch buttons now function the way they ought to. The buttons are lit so when you touch one or the other, the light goes off for each touch indicating the volume is going up or down one notch. No need for the buzzing system beep... Anyhow, thought to share this...
