I won't say you need one. Many people use their stock sound cards with satisfactory results. Many find it hard to overcome incipient latency with stock sound cards. Most find their stock sound cards lacking when recording big projects with lots of effects and soft synths.
Most stock sound cards will use either MME or WDM audio drivers, MME being the oldest, slowest driver. A new one available when Vista came out is WASAPI. Or you can try ASIO4All (Google it, free download), which often eliminates excessive latency.
The better preamps and faster, more efficient analog-to-digital processing of an audio interface go a long way toward getting professional results, even if you're not a professional.
So, try it with what you have; if it works for you, cool.
But I think you will be better off and more satisfied with an audio interface designed for recording that uses true ASIO audio drivers.
