Yeah, that one was on here last night along with another one - something about The Beatles in Germany or Russia or something.  Recorded them all!

I "happened" across this while channel surfing.... I normally don't go to the lower numbers on the dial, but out of sheer boredom, with nothing on the channels between 71 to 30.... I ventured into the lower chambers of TV hell..... and there was the John Lennon documentary that you speak of...... I mostly caught the part about Nixon and his administration declaring (quietly of course) that John was public enemy #1 and how they were trying to deport him.... After a few minutes of listening to that stuff and a few comments from Yoko (how much of that can one take and still remain sane?) and a few snippits from the Plastic Ono Band.... (another case of how much of that can you take?)... I decided to engage in something more intellectually challenging...like unloading the dish washer and stacking the plates in the cabinet.

Don't get me wrong... I think John Lennon is one of the more brilliant songwriters of the modern age.....and in fairness to the documentary, I did not catch all of it, maybe they did focus on his genius as a songwriter, in a different segment of the show.....just not the part I saw.

    great show.

and an excellent understanding, and TELLING, of how all these things john was into when he got to new york, came about, and damn if it didn't make perfect sense to me.

this was about political activism, and his search for something that was 'bigger picture'

there aren't many artists who would have ever gone where lennon went...
there haven't been many in the past, and there just aren't any now.

    HI,

Haven't seen that, but I have at least 3 specials that were set on LP and delivered to radio stations only. One of them, had some really good stuff about him talking about everyone about him, and how it was impossible to tell who to trust and believe, and also his fight to stand up for Yoko, and people knocking her all the time ... and I have always carried that feeling.

There weren't, and there aren't, that many artists that are that honest and open about themselves and can actually discuss it.

And to me that is the difference.

I personally do not think that John improved musically, and too much of it, I really think that was because of all the people around him not challenging him ... if he had been in Germany or France, instead of New York, I think that he would have done things a bit different, instead of having to be an old Beatle ... which he had stated in that special, that he wasn't a Beatle anymore .. he was John Lennon!

I still hold him in high regard!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Even though he did not go to Germany or France?

Or that he made essentially commercial music?

I hold him in high regard a lot more as a person, than I do as a musician ... but I would think that Bapu would have a hard time doing good stuff musically when all the people around him are high schoolers, hangers on and the like ... getting a free ride and meal at your expense.

It ends with Yoko having a three way with Pete Townsend &  Sally Struthers while "Everybody Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey" playing on the bedroom radio........ while Andy Kaufman is video taping it and singing a long as Lotca. Thank You Very Much.
