Any suggestions for a wireless mic

My wife wants a wireless mic for her band's  http://merryandthemoodswings.com/default.aspx live shows and Christmas is coming up. I'm sadly ignorant of the pros and cons as well as hand's on experience.

Any suggestions?  $100 - $200 ought to do it for a single, handheld mic.  I'm looking at a Sennheiser @ GC for about $200 (w/ the 15% discount today).

Sennheiser is the gold standard for music performance. I use LectroSonics of communications type work.

Sennheiser's 935 dynamic mic is very nice. Can you get a package built around that?

Don't skimp on quality... the best wireless mics have reliability issues with reception on bad days... get something better than low budget.

    best regards,
    mike

    Thanks Mike.

That's always the question - how much to spend?  On the one hand they only do about a dozen shows a year.  On the other, it is a decision I''ll have to live with - litterally. ;-)

The Lectro stuff is really expensive... I just honestly don't know what the pricing is for music... but it seems to be a lot cheaper.

Most of the stuff works ok but when there is a lot of other traffic to share with it can be problematic. If there are lots of reflective surfaces... it can be problematic.

The transmitters are rated by power output. E.G. my Lectrosonics belt packs are 100mW.

The systems can be simple or have "diversity". You should at a minimum shop for a diverse system.
The basic ones have dual receivers and automatically choose the better signal that is available. The fancier divers systems have full redundancy and dual channels etc.

The better systems are frequency agile; meaning that the channels can be switched if you get to the gig and find that your frequency is getting stepped on by some other activity.

The best systems are diverse, frequency agile, moderately high powered, (if you go too high you need a radio license) and have great upgrade antenna hook up options.

My Lectro Sonics UHF systems are about $3k per channel... without the microphone.

Find out what it costs for a diverse music performance mic and see if that matches your budget. I would have guessed $500-$600 is a price point where everything starts clicking... and you end up with a mic you'll enjoy for the next 10 years.

    Good luck,
    mike

The XLR to Wireless systems are well worth looking into.

This is just a random example, there are many others too.  The beauty of going this route is you most likely already own a good mike, So now you are only paying for the wireless component as apposed to both the element and the transmitter and receiver. This gives you a higher quality system at the same price point.

As a pro sound guy,  I have been handed many wireless mikes and all I can say is if it didn't cost over $600 it's going to be a pain in the butt. The same people who make good solid performance mikes make the best wireless but they also make low end junk. Plastic??
Also get one that uses AA batteries. Batteries are very important as you don't what the thing to die half way through the second set.
Of the cheaper plastic types I've used Audio Technica and Shure have good battery life and tone. I do not like the cheaper Sennheisers or Nadys
