new i7 setup?

I just purchased my new i7-740 1.73 Quad core  dell computer about 2 days ago. i just upgraded from a T3000 duo processor…  wonder if their anything I need to do to optimize my computer to take full advantage of the i7 processor? is there something in sonar 8.5 i need to have checked. right now my CPU is running about 20% about the same as my T-3000  duo processor, i expected it to drop a lot. with and i7 processor should i gain better cpu usage.  can someone please explain?

The I7's have a hyperthreading mode that will split each core into two virtual cores so I would definitely take advantage of that feature. Then it's all down to optimizing the system as you would do normally, getting rid of background apps and such.

I'm not the one that should be helping you with this,  but my i7 920 with Sonar and 4+ gigs of soft synths loaded rests with about 5% showing on CPU usage.  I can play about 20 midi tracks and a video at the same time and it might jump to 45%.

My guess is you have to many services loaded when you boot up or that you are not running in 64 bit mode.

hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in soon.

the dell is the biggest issue your older laptop had less issues than the new one

the 620m 640m even the 540m outperform the quads
mobile quads are a complete waste of money for audio
GHz is king. a 640 is 2.8GHz nearly 1000Mhz faster than your quad.
