Latency with a Behringer UCG102

Hi there

Wondering if I could get some opinions here.

I have two PCs - One is my main DAW and the other is my general purpose PC.

I decided I would like to occasionally jam along to MP3s with my bass. However, rather than power up my DAW every time I wished to do this, I decided to get a Behringer UCG102 USB interface to use with my general purpose PC. Although this works okay with the accompanying NI Guitar combos software, I wanted to make recordings of my jams in Sonar 7 PE and perhaps EQ cut the original recording's bass frequency.

My problem is that the latency level I'm forced to use is so off-putting that it ruins the experience. The MP3 track I import into Sonar 7 PE will only play/record (without immediate dropout) if the Behringer's ASIO panel latency is set to its highest. Although the recording turns out okay, the monitoring ain't pretty and playing along with a muted bass sucks quite frankly.   :-(

Is this likely to be a Behringer driver problem (I'm using the latest available)?

Would the Cakewalk UA-1G be any different?

I know you're probably thinking. Why did a Sonar user opt for the Behringer? Well...half the price along with reviews that it worked fine was a big part of the decision.

you could try ASIO4ALL (behringer even has a link for it on their website for the USG series).

otherwise, yes, the UA1G should be better drivers.

    Thanks Beagle

I'll check the Behringer website first and see what the ASIO4All can do for me. It's odd that I can play in conjunction with the NI Combos with very low latency but in Sonar it's dreadfully high latency.

I may have to take a punt on the a UA-1G if need be.

    Thanks again

I have the Behringer UCA202 and found that it works best with WDM drivers. The UCG102 also supports WDM mode. Try using that and adjusting your buffer size and latency controls to see if your performance improves.

    Thanks for that info Tap

Unfortunately, I tried it with the WDM drivers and although they were usable in terms of latency, my monitoring and recordings of my playing had what can only be described as a distant helicopter-like sound every time I struck a note. It was not as loud as the music but an unacceptable intrusion none-the-less (even just on one track).

I also tried ASIO4All as suggested by Beagle. However, this did not work out at all.

I ordered the Cakewalk UA-1G yesterday. I'm not sure when it will get to me due to the snow here just now. I'll post how I get on once it arrives and I can get chance to test it.

Incidentally, the UCG102 also comes with EnergyXT2 DAW software. I couldn't figure the darn thing out though. lol

Hmm..... Did you adjust the settings for optimal performance? I can get decent latency out of mine, but I sometimes have to adjust it if I start taxing the system.

    Hi Tap

Nothing I seemed to do made any difference. I tried latencies of every couple of ms in WDM. the crap noise remained - even at high ridiculous latencies.

In ASIO4All, nothing changed in respect of latency. It was still poor. However, it did not give me the same horrid noise I got using WDM.

Still awaiting the UA-1G. This bloody snow here in Scotland has ground things to a halt. I had lots of things planned around expectant deliveries.

    Just to update the thread.

The snow has eased a little here in the UK and allowed several deliveries to come through.

I received my UA-1G today and have been recording along to MP3s this evening which I imported into Sonar and EQed the bass out of (so that I could get more me). It worked brilliantly with next to no latency.

I'm glad I took the gamble on the UA-1G.  I regret not having bought it first.

Incidentally, my UA-1G works with the standalone NI Guitar Combos which came bundled with the Behringer UCG102. Ace!!!

Cheers for the advice and help Beagle and Tap. Much appreciated.
