7 and 8.5 Producer compatibility for project sharing

Hello everyone!
I am still on Sonar 7 since it does all I need so far.

I have a project coming up where a guy will be recording drums and bringing it back to me for overdubs, then I am sending it back for mixing.

So my main issue would be back and forth compatibility. I remember we used to do that with bundle files in the olden days of Sonar 1...6 so how should I proceed on this one?

So still save as a bundle or just copy all the files back and forth?

Screw bundles. They can get corrupt easier than CWP and per project and CWP and per project is allot more organized with string the audio for each project.

Look into it and read up on it.

Thanks! I guess it will be just two back and forths between the studios so I can live with bundles since the master files will be there in case we need to go another way.

There's always the old school approach of lining up all the files with a common start point but I'd hate to work that route since it is too convoluted.

Where would I find info on 8.5 and backward file compatibility if I don't own it? Nothing on it in this forum. Maybe Cakewalk tech can answer that for me?

I just tried loading a project I am working on in 64bit 8.5.3 into Sonar 7 32bit and it works just fine.  It gives a warning about "it may not sound the quite same if some newer features were used in the newer version of sonar".

If AUDIO SNAP 2 or V-Vocal is used you would want to bounce them down first as they would not pass back and forth.  I think you are not even allowed to save as a bundle if there are any tracks with the AS on IIRC.

The README file in Sonar goes into detail about what may or may not get lost when going between Sonar versions. I don't have 8.5 on this machine, or I'd post the relevant info for you. For the most part you can share projects between different versions without problems. The only issues are when you use some feature that wasn't available in previous versions. If you use one of those features, and then open the project in an earlier version that doesn't have that feature, you'll lose that aspect. But the project will open just fine.

Thanks, this was all very useful information. Unfortunately never managed to test it out as the singer ego prohibited us from moving forward and the band imploded before even going that fat :(

Ya, Bands seem to do that don't they! It's like being married to 3 or 4 people.

Just in case someone else plans on this sharing a project idea,  I recommend before recording create an album folder where all the songs will go along with both CWP and the audio folder for each song. I don't see the point of bundle files anymore, CWP seems to work fine.  When the first sesson is done, just drag drop the folder to a flash drive or external HD and off you go.
Make sure to name that folder including the date so you'll know which copy is the latest.
Just drag and drop to your audio drive of next computer and start working.
When done , rename the folder with today's date and send it back.

If your going back and forth a few times it's a good idea to keep each version possibly on the external drive as a back up. To avoid opening the wrong version after you dump the folder to the next computer go to that folder and open the songs by double clicking the CWP file.

You see hard drives space is no longer an issue so this is like a system restore idea where you can go back at any time to a older version.
