Yamaha DTXPLORER Drums and Session Drummer 3 Problem

Hi

I just picked up a set of Yamaha DTXPLORER drums, and was hoping to be able to use them to trigger Session Drummer 3.

Using a MIDI cable, i have connected the Yamaha brain to my computer.

After I insert the SD3 soft synth into the rack and create the track, I was able to select the Yamaha as the MIDI input.

Everything seems to be working fairly well, with a couple of exceptions:

1) the snare drum is triggering one of the loops in SD3, and not the snare drum sound
2) the kick is also triggering a loop, and not the kick sound.

All of the other tom and cymbal pads on the Yamaha are triggering the right (corresponding) sounds in SD3.

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks so much in advance

CJ

Did you make sure that the A,B,C,D options in the SD3 are unchecked. Everything should be unchecked. I ran accross this myself...Mark

    Thanks.
Verified and A,B,C, and D were 'unchecked'

Upon further digging, I learned that my kick is triggering LOOP G, and the snare is triggering LOOP E.

I can't find where to configure this. Any thoughts?

Can you change the midi note number that your drum controller outputs on each drum instrument?

I use Session Drummer 2 and in its drum map I see that several notes below the kick drum notes will trigger loops. If you can change the note number that your kick and snare outputs, just match it up to the right note as displayed in the PRV.

the midi note numbers that the dtx sends are set and can not be changed. you'll have to change the note number that SD recieves to match the dtx.

How do I view the Session Drummer drum map (sorry, I'm not experienced with drum maps).

It should show by default in the midi track you have output to Session Drummer.

Here is the PRV in a midi track I have assigned to Session Drummer 2

Below the AcBDr are the numbers 0-7/A-H. These correspond to loops in session drummer 2. An incoming note can play those loops unless you unload them in Session Drummer, though this will not redirect the note to the proper instrument. If your controller is sending a note that is triggering a loop instead of a single drum sample then, I would think, you either have to change the incoming note to match the right drum or remap the drum so the same incoming note triggers the right instrument. I am at a loss as to why your drum controller is sending notes that trigger loops instead of the right drum sounds as session drummer is using standard General Midi note numbers for the kick and snare.

If you are only concerned about the recorded midi so you can play back the midi track using Session Drummer, you can just play normally and listen to the Yamaha's sounds. After recording you can change the midi notes that are triggering loops to the right notes. That is very easy to do.

ok, so i think i have it figured out.

    here's what i've learned:

    - first thing you need to do is create a Drum Map which maps the pad triggers from the DTXPLORER to Session Drummer 3

here's an image of the drum map that i made, and so far, it seems to work (it is my first one)

and in case you can't see the image, here's a link to it

    Link to image

in order to actually make the drum map, click on the OUTPUT drop down in the SD3 track, and you will see "Drum Map Manager" as an option. Once you select it, click on new at the top of the dialogue box. Once this is done, you need to create each note line one at a time. Just copy what I've done in the image. Save it, and use a name that is memorable. My trick for this is to use an Exclamation mark ! as the first letter of the name; this way, it is usually at the top of the list, as all the existing drum map names are sorted alphabetically (and there are LOTS of them).

    - next, in track view for the SD3 track, select your DTX midi as the input, and select a Drum Map that you create as the output

    - make sure that the SD3 track is in focus (or active), and now try tapping the pads on the drum kit. noise should come out.

thanks for the input and help.

You need a manual for the DTXpress and find out how to get to all the individual drum pads and set their midi out.  I have a DTXpressII and maps are fine but useless if the brain isn't set right.

    Chez,

thank you very much for figuring this one out, it would have taken me forever or even longer to get my dtXplorer kit to work with SD2 without these instructions!

    Cheers,
