Playback issues....
MC 4 - Simple problem, but I'm not finding a simple solution. Basically, when I hit play, nothing happens. It doesn't even try to play the track. It's not that it plays but I'm not hearing anything; it's that it actually won't do anything. This happens with both audio and MIDI tracks, in a number of different projects. I've tried switching drivers, even though I'm pretty sure it's not an audio problem per se. Note: This just started happening out of the blue. It was fine one day, the I opened a project the next day, hit play, and nothing happened. Since then I've been double checking drivers, switching drivers, opening different projects, trying to play different tracks, and I'm not having any luck figuring anything out. Any ideas?

Fill us in on what you got: Which version of MC? What's your operating system? Is it a 64-bit OS? What's your sound card or audio interface? How much RAM does the computer have? Putting this info in your signature (set it up under your forum profile) at the bottom will keep us from having to ask this every time.

Is the transport advancing when you hit play? If it is moving, then check to make sure your tracks are not muted or you have a track with nothing playing solo'd. Also, check and make sure the softsynths you used before are in the Synth Rack. Also make sure your sound device is selected properly and working.

Music Creator 4, XP, 32 Bit, standard Realtek AC'97 card, 1G RAM. Like I said, I've never had this problem with this setup before, it happened just out of the blue, which is why it's so confusing. I've tried switching to MME and ASIO drivers instead of the WDM ones, and it didn't solve it....not really sure what the issue is.

Do you get an indication of a drop out? Or that the audio engine has stopped (same thing actually)? Any recent updates from MS? With the AC97, MME should be ok, WDM maybe a bit dodgy. ASIO will not work. Have you tried a system restore to the last time it worked?

OK.. is the transport moving along the time line or does it NOT move at all? If it's moving there could be a number of reasons you have no sound. wrong drivers, outputs going to the wrong place, muted outputs..... among other things.

Transport bar is not moving at all, and it's not giving any indication of audio dropout (I've had that issue before; this is nothing like it)....which is why I'm not thinking it's an audio problem per se. My sound card is working correctly; I've tried both MME and WDM/KS drivers and niether makes a difference. And of course, nothing is muted or solo'd; and I'm not using any softsynths.

All Right.... here's your problem. I just replicated this in my lappy. You don't have the sound card set up correctly. One or more of your setting is not correct. I opened a project on the lappy that I was working on just a few days ago (yeah I still use the lappy in the studio). The project was JUST a few audio tracks and since I just recorded it, I knew it ran the other day. BUT.... I also had my Saffire interface connected. Just now, I opened it WITHOUT my soundcard/interface connected and clicked on the playback... it started to move and immediately stopped since MC4 DID NOT SEE A VIABLE SOUND CARD. Audio should always play if the sound card is working properly. So check those settings.

+1 on not having the sound card set up. I've seen this before as well.

I seem to have found the problem after double checking those settings. For some reason, MC4 didn't have my soundcard selected as the playback timing master. I selected it, and playback works fine. I don't remember ever having to manually select it before, but hey, what works, works...right? Lol.
