Please answer me this... Sonar X1 upgrade issue + general q

Hi all,

I've been scouring the net and sending emails for aaages, trying to solve this issue, but - no surprise here for a lot of you, I'm sure - to no avail.

Please allow me to copy/paste my issue here, that I've sent numerous times, in different languages, to different support services. I would be infinitely grateful for any feedback whatsoever.

---I recently bought a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) by an italian make, Project Lead.

In the instruction manual in the computer, they basically forbid the owner from connecting the machine to the internet.

Therefore, I was wondering if it is at all possible to download all necessary upgrades/updates/products onto my regular use PC, load them onto USB drive, download them onto the DAW and proceed with installation?

Also, I've been meaning to upgrade from Sonar 8.5 Studio to Sonar X1 Studio: Will Sonar 8.5 Studio have to be already installed on the machine, in order for the upgrade to work?

Also, I'm confused as to how much I'm supposed to pay. I do not apply to the free upgrade period, as I bought and registered Sonar 8.5 Studio before November 1st 2010. However, the My Account page tells me that to upgrade to Sonar X1 Studio, I have to pay €179, instead of the other lower price of €89.

Is this a mistake? Or is it because I ordered a boxed version of Sonar 8.5 Studio from a retailer here in Italy, and not from the official Cakewalk E Shop?---

Pleeease help!

Infinite thanks in advance for your very kind reply,

Mike

I could be wrong, but when they forbid you from connecting to the internet they are likely suggesting that you should not have any internet connections open while operating the program to conserve all resources.

As far as the upgrade prices are concerned, from my understanding, if you purchased prior to November 1st you would not be entitled to a free upgrade.  If prior to Nov 1st you would have to pay for the upgrade.  I would contact Cakewalk directly for clarification on the pricing at the Cakewalk store. It sounds like it should be the 89 if you had registered 8.5.

i can answer two of your questions:

it doesnt matter if u bought a boxed version, if you registered it, sonar knows that you own it and therefore u should be eligible for the lower upgrade price

and YES, if yyou but the upgrade, you must have the prior version installed.
i have never had a problem having multiple versions installed

    Thanks for your reply,

Actually, they forbid the user from connecting to the internet because it's a machine whose operating system was programmed by professionals to only run music-related 'everything', meaning that it has been super streamlined etc. and so, by connecting it to the internet, you would interfere with the programming and likely change it, even if unintentionally. For example, it has no antivirus software and they actually said to never run Windows Update unless specifically told, by Project Lead, to do so. All resource-hogging software/applications/processes have already been removed, therefore rendering the machine at a very high risk of any smallest threat.

I already knew that I don't apply for the free upgrade, as stated in my initial post, but thanks for your help and your feedback in saying that I should be entitled to the €89 upgrade to Sonar X1 Studio. I think so too... I tried contacting Cakewalk by all possible means - to no avail (for the time being) - except from calling them directly: as you can understand it's no simple matter doing so from Italy, so I was leaving that as a last resort...

    Thanks for your reply,

I thought I should be eligible for the lower price too, hence my confusion at the fact that evidently Cakewalk don't seem to think so, even though I did register it and everything... Thanks for your help either way. Thanks for answering my question about whether or not the previous version must be installed in order for the upgrade to work, too :) Shall be carried out thusly

No, you do not have to have an older version installed at all. All upgrades are full programs. The only exception was for the 8.5 upgrade download. But if you had bought the boxed version upgrade of 8.5 you did not need the content from 8 to install it.

The only version that ever needed the previous version was the DL of 8.5. That was because 8 came on 4 double layer DVDs.

Through out the years CW has always given a full version with each upgrade. X1 is no different.

    Alrighty then!

Anybody know then if I can download stuff on my regular-use PC, move it onto USB storage device and install on my music PC??

BTW for the time being I have chosen to stick to SONAR Studio 8.5.3, given the fact that apparently - as I have read on this thread - SONAR X1 is basically a BETA??

Yes.  If you have the space and time to do so, there should not be any issues. You will need to use the off-line method to activate your Native Instrument packages (Guitar Rig), but the instructions (Italian pdf is available I noted) will get you up and running.
