Click track for band recording?

Hi everyone,

My band recorded our first demo (four songs) and it came out OK.  There were some things that we wanted to do differently and so we decided to do the whole thing all over again.  We have the mics, the recording equipment, the location, etc., so it's not costing us anything.  Basically just time, which is fine.

Anyway, one of the things that we wanted to fix was the rhythm.  We decided that we want to record to a click track.  In Sonar Home Studio 6XL, how would I set up a project and have a click track going?  Unfortunately, the stupid metronome in Sonar is broken and no sound comes from it.  So, how should I go about doing this?

If you can't hear the Metronome it may not be configured right. It can be either a Midi output or Audio output. If Midi, you can set the Port and other info at the bottom of  the Project Options>Metronome window. Port 1 would be the first one that shows up in your midi devices list. If you choose to have an audio Metronome, you can set its options in the same Window. Most importantly, you have to assign it an audio output. I like to create a bus and name it Metronome (if there isn't already one) and assign the output of the Metronome to it. That way I can control the volume. You can have the Metronome play during recording, Playback, or both. You can have it do a count in before playback or recording starts. If you want to use it as a click track during playback you HAVE to enable Playback in that window. Same with recording.

I know that might seem didactic but I'm just trying to address the issue that the the metronome isn't prone to breaking, but is often configured wrong.

OK, you can easily make your own Metronome track using a soft synth. Here is a quick way to do this.

Insert the TTS-1 Soft Synth. In the options window that opens select Simple Instrument Track, and nothing else. Click OK to close the window.

Name the new track Metronome... or Fred. Whatever works for you.

Select a channel in the new Instrument track. Channel 10 is good for drums, though it doesn't really make any difference in this situation.

Change the BANK to Preset Rhythm.

Change the Patch to one of the Drum Sets in the list.

Open the PRV for the track. Set the Snap to Grid to Quarter.

Click the Draw Tool and then select one of the notes icons to the right of the Draw Tool. Use an eight note or smaller. Doesn't make any difference since the notes will only be triggering a drum sound.

Using the Draw tool, enter a note on every beat on whatever drum instrument you want to use for several measures. Make sure all 4 beats in every measure has a note on it. Go to the Track View and make sure the Snap To Grid is set to Measure. Copy the new clip as many times as you want to make the Metronome track as long as you want. You can use Edit>Copy>Paste or just click and drag while holding the shift key down.

I created a project called My Template with a simple MIDI drum track, kick, hat, snare. I wrote a single measure then converted that measure to a groove clip.
Added 2 measures of wood blocks for a count-in before the groove clip. Now whenever I start a new project, I just open My Template and drag the groove-clipped drum track out as far as I want it to go and set the tempo.
Once you've finished your initial tracks, save it under another name and in the Projects folder. I thought I had lost some projects because they weren't in the Projects folder; they were in the My Template folder.

and if you can't get the CW metronome working, it's no biggie to just record your own. Start a metronome and put a mike to it, and record it for at least as long as you expect the song to go. That will be an audio track.
