Screensets cause my floppy drive to click and light up - *SOLVED*!
I hope one of the Bakers / Staff can chime in here ... When I change screensets (somewhat quickly) my floppy turns on and clicks. I just put in a 1G Nvidia 9500GT video so I'll see if that stops the crashing I've been experiencing, but this floppy turning on worries me. A few others users have reported it. Can any CW'er shed some light on this please? THanks.

What brand 9500 did you get? Galaxy, PNY, true Nvidia?

Bub What brand 9500 did you get? Galaxy, PNY, true Nvidia? EVGA ... it's an authorized NVidia card. It's one I had as a spare here (actually for a client) and it's got all the stuff, so to speak. Specs are decent too. Although I'm still crashing with it anyway. This is 1G, my previous card was only 256MB so I was hoping for better results. But the clicking is totally weird - and as I said, I'm not the only one reporting it.

Btw it doesn't 'click' on every screenset change, just certain ones (like 4, 5, 6) and if I change sets quickly (though not like a machine gun, just more like scrolling through them) it happens more often.

I've used EVGA cards before. Seemed to run fine for me. Check for updated drivers from Nvidia for the 9500 chipset if you haven't already. I just updated mine and it fixed a lot of problems I was having with Win 7 Aero. That floppy drive clicking is really weird. The last time I had a floppy drive installed in my PC it went bad and blew out my motherboard. I ripped it out and haven't used one since. That's been, oh heck, at least 5 ~ 6 years now. Good luck with it. Sorry to hear about all the little bumps you're running in to. I still haven't received my boxed version of X1 yet from Sweetwater.

Are you pretty sure it's not related to the media browser (i.e., browser's open in the screensets where drive turns on)?

Sometimes things just don't go easy in this world :( I went from a smooth running power user to a car stuck in mud LOL.

I've actually taken the time to setup my screensets the way I like as a normal template as well as in a few test projects. I don't keep the browser open in any (yet) since it's just a "B" away. I wish it was that, it would be an easy fix, so to speak. I DO have another idea I'm trying now -- TBC.

I was the one who was having problems with long pauses between screensets where the browser was either collapsed or open but not completely closed. I disabled the floppy controller in Win7 and everything was fine. It actually turned out I had a floppy still configured in BIOS from an old install, and that's why Windows installed the controller driver (so I turned floppy off in BIOS). But I do think the browser constantly polls whatever drives are configured on your system, even when just switching between screensets with the browser open or collapsed.

Well I've got GOOOD news! I've solved both the crashing and the floppy issue! Here's the deal: 1- I disabled the floppy in the BIOS (though that doesn't speak to WHY screensets were making it turn on/off/click). Not a problem anymore at least! 2- I FORGOT that i had installed RealVNC on my DAW (but I actually don't use it so I forgot it was there) which also installs a dispaly "mirror driver". Once I uninstalled RealVNC I was able to switch screensets rapidly and constantly for quite awhile without a single crash! And changing screensets happens quickly now too. WHEW - I feel like I can at least move forward now and get to know X1 (I actually do know a bunch already hehe). I'm happy to report this progress and hope it may help others! Thanks for the feedback from those who provided it - including Seth who was kind enough to help in PM!

Coolness. Yeah, I was really annoyed when I had the pause on my machine. Now I have one less thing to worry about.

I still think there's an issue as to why screensets would cause clicking on an empty floppy (except, asyou mention if the browser was pointing to it specifically). But at least I'm not stuck in mud now! ;) Thanks.

Still having this issue while switching screenset with browser open or opening media browser on screensets. Sonar (Platinum, latest March 2015 Update) will hang for several minutes. This happens on my Lenovo Y510p notebook. There is no floppy option in the BIOS, nor do I see a floppy drive in the device manager of Windows (8.1). Anyone else using a Y510p? I still can't really understand why this only happens with Sonar, I do not have any issues with other software on this notebook. Thanks, Michael

This thread gave me quite a start. When I saw it was dated December 15, I thought someone must have hijacked Billy's old account. I guess the year never gets added to the date - that's not very helpful at all. And yes, Billy was a bright star and prolific composer. I miss him.
