Disk Copy, format, copy back to Defragment?

I have Ivory II which is sample based on it's own very fast drive. I did something real stupid and de-fragmented the drive. Now I get all kinds of pops and ticks.

Rather than re-install many gigs of libraries, can I copy all the libraries to a different disk, then format the original disk and copy the libraries back?

Will this result in contiguous files, or is the copy only going to put them back in their screwed up state?

TIA..

Yes, your files will be contiguous by copying to a freshly formatted drive.

To copy the files off the drive, then format the drive, then copy them back is quicker then a reinstall?

If you have the original disks, why not simply format the drive thereby cleansing it of the garbage and fragmented files, and simply do a clean re-install and go on with a perfectly clean drive?

I would think that even if it did take longer..... it would be better in the long run.

Maybe Ivory II wasn't the only thing on the drive.

Why do you think reinstalling would be better in the long run?

If you simply reinstall, you still have lots of fragmented files on the disk.... a format wipes it clean, and you are starting with what is essentially a blank canvas.

If you're going to go through all that and take the time to remove everything to a backup disk and then ...... why not simply format the drive and reinstall... that's what I would do.

I have a lappy that I reformatted and reinstalled all my software on about a year ago. (C drive with OS) It was not half as bad as I envisioned it would be. I plan to do the same thing again probably in January when I have the time.  It is also a good time to evaluate the software on it and see exactly what I want to reinstall or not.

I know you are talking about a secondary drive, so it should be even easier to format and reinstall. Start the install and go get a cup of coffee. You end up with a clean install on a freshly formatted drive. Life should be good.

Someone here a year or two back made the comment that they routinely reformat the drives and reinstall everything on a yearly basis, due to all the crap a computer tends to pick up on the net and in routine operation.....stuff that really slows the machine down. The only way to avoid that is to be off the internet totally and never do upgrades.  Then a regular defrag and back up is about all you should ever need to do.

Regarding de-fragmenting, I use Auslogics Disk Defrag (not BoostSpeed) exclusively on my drives and it does a great job of laying out the files contiguously on my sample drive.
    It's free for home use.

I wonder if anyone has seen a significant benefit to doing a defrag?

There's a lot of marketing info that tries to convince you to buy a defrag product.  But there's also non-marketing info that says with today's modern (fast and big) disks and operating systems, defragging doesn't buy you anything.

My personal experience is that defragging does not give any performance boost but I've typically run with disks that have a lot of free space (fairly typical since you can't buy a small hard disk any more).  However, a defrag causes Norton Ghost to do a full backup, rather than an incremental, which takes a long time and uses more backup disk space.  Not a win for me!

Still have to disagree. It's just a data drive. Once it's formatted, nothing is faster than simply copying the data from the external drive.

I see your point.... that is faster than the install from scratch.....

Isn't that the whole reason for the OP? It was a defragging operation that caused the initial problems on a sample drive.

So... it seems to have fixed one and screwed the other one up..... therefore, defrag the drive at your own peril.

Actually I'm still a little surprised that a defrag would cause any problems at all.

Just goes to show you that you should probably do a backup before a defrag. And also to only do a defrag if necessary.
