You can go the other way, too, and take out the low end w/ a high pass filter. That is what most filtering is used for, rolling out the low end to keep it open for your bass and kick. there is lots of low end energy that doesn't define the sound but just eats up space and energy. On vocals I'll often roll off the low end until up to 100 to 200 hz. Like many effects, do it until you can hear it (and in this case start losing information) and then back off. Helps get rid of rumbles and other noise.
Some filters are more like synth filters, and you can run a sound through them and get resonant feedback at the cutoff point. Fun if not an every day effect.
The nomeclature is confusing at first and I still have to think the whole description, not the low and high.
