tempted to buy ozone 4
Hey. I'm tempted to buy Ozone 4 for mastering use. So far I've used with master projects the bundled Sonar 7 PE plug-ins. (linear phase eq, linear multiband) + FLUX's bitter sweet + stereo tool for m/s and stereo processing. What do you think, what does Ozone 4 do better, or in other words, what is in there that cannot be accomplished with other plug-ins ? I've tried Ozone's demo, and I did like the sound, but I'm circling around, whether to buy, or not to buy it.

I would dive in.... stop circling. I was amazed at what it did for the music. I like Ozone for a number of reasons. Among them is the ton of presets for different styles and genres and applications. I use it on everything. The one thing I do not like is the reverb in it... So I still use the cake Studioverb2 as my go to reverb. I don't think you can go wrong with O4.

Sure, there are plenty of other tools that will also get the same job done. But they are all considerably more expensive than Ozone. And I have never heard of anyone who bought and used Ozone who later abandoned it for something better.

And I have never heard of anyone who bought and used Ozone who later abandoned it for something better. that's actually pretty amazing, especially considering it is one of the more affordable "mastering suites" on the market. But yeah, it works well.... so why fix it if it works...

A long time ago I followed Bitflipper's excellent advice about Ozone and I have never looked back. Now its your turn. Ozone is good stuff. Aside from making everything sound great, I actually learned a lot by using it, and hearing what each module did, and seeing how they interacted. As far as I'm concerned, its a no brainer.

That's the neat thing about Ozone.... if you don't already have it, go to their website and download the mastering tips and info. It will help you to understand more of what goes on under the hood, which in turn makes you better with the tools when you use them knowing exactly what they are doing.

I find the presets in Ozone to be extreme, Sometimes I start from scratch and don't necessarily use all the modules, lately I've been avoiding the use of multiband compression and am getting amicable results. But yeah, the presets in Ozone I find are exaggerated so you can definitely hear differences in them and I think it's intentional too, it can help in the learning process. But just slapping a preset on will not give you the best results, in the case of Ozone, if you've already got a decent mix, more is less with the parameters you can tweak. Bapu, I don't have the UAD mastering suite, I"ve demoed the precision bus compressor and the precision limiter, from what I remember I don't think I liked the bus compressor but it could've just been the mix I was using it on that it didn't sound to great. The precision limiter seemed pretty good. The thing I like about Ozone, is you slap it on and it's simple to tweak a few things... and it's a lot of what you could need is there. I'm interested in learning FX chains now though, because it looks like you could more or less make your own "Ozone" of your favorite plugs! *edit* I forgot to mention I'm talking about Sonar X1 there

While there are other plug-ins that could do the same job or better, it really is one of the better deals out there. You'd be hard pressed to beat it for the money.

Read the Ozone Mastering Guide. That'll provide more instant gratification than Bob Katz's book, although that one's definitely recommended too.
