Recording a Track while playing back another track

Is there a way to record a track and then record a second track while playing back the first one.  Then record a 3rd track while playing back the first two tracks? The last time we tried that we had a delay but since then we reloaded the app on a newer W7 machine.

It's a very fundamental requirement of a DAW.

Just arm the track you want to record, (but not the one(s) you want to hear), then press record.

If you are getting a delay this is known as latency, you need to adjust your latency as low as is comfortable for you to play or sing without hearing significant delay and also  without introducing problems with your ability to hear clear audio output, if it isn't possible to do that satisfactorily then you'll need to set up a way of 'direct monitoring' your input signal alongside hearing your HS project output.

How you do that will be somewhat dependant on your system setup.  See tips in your help file for reducing latency on your system.

If you get stuck with that, post again, with details of your system particularly your audio interface.  You may get better help then by posting in the Home Studio forum as other users will be familiar with the specific app.

    You'll find that here,

The delay, or latency as it is properly called, is generally present when a "less than optimal" sound card is being used..... such as the factory card in almost ALL computers.

Most users here have upgraded to  dedicated recording specific interface. These interfaces are designed to do exactly what you are asking and the music plays back flawlessly in sync.

Most professional music stores (not the mom and pop stores on main street...generally) like Sam Ash, Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Musicians Friend, and others have a recording department and they can assist you in choosing a card that will meet your needs and budget.

How long is your delay Viola? Even with the best of systems there is a delay no matter whether you can hear it or not. Direct monitoring will help if you can't find how to adjust your timing physically ( as in Playing in time with it). You can add as many tracks to a project with a pre-recorded track as you like. Most daw recording is done that way. As in doing vocal takes to a guitar part, adding drums, adding bass, adding keyboard-synth parts. It's a bit "off" from real time performing with several peices so, if you're a trained performer you'll really notice minute differences when introducing data in synch to pre-recorded track playing from a DAW.
