Tracks

I want to record a track that has several small bits of information.  Rather than recording an entire track that consists of mostly no sound, I thought I had seen a method of recording a series of "abbreviated" tracks within a timeline.  In other words, it would record a very short track, then it would be blank until the next short track, and so on.  It's similar to punch recording, but I want to do it multiple times within the same track; sort of punch in - punch out several times within the same track.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.
