Once you have a stable system what do you use for makeing a Disk Image ?

Hi all

Like the subject says what do you all use ?

I have been working on geting a very stable system and I am now ready and want to make a Image of my OS drive since Ive done a lot of tweeks and so on and dont want to lose it all

I back up everything else to external hard drives or burn to disk and keep Archives etc

Ive never had to make a image of a disk before so what do you all recomend?
Acronis ? Ghost ? or is there other ways ?

Whats your thoughts ?

Thanks all

Norrie

AFAIK, Acronis works better than Ghost on Win7-64

So tell me why I shouldn't use the image utility included with Win 7?

    Thanks,

I've never used the Windows backup program as I prefer Acronis or Paragon.
The one thing Acronis is great for is catastrophic failure of an hdisk or upgrading a system to a new hdisk or such.

Boot the Acronis recovery DVD, point it to your image which can be on a network, DVD's other hdisks etc and away it goes.

It's just about idiot proof and works very well.

Is the Windows 7 image program able to do that?
IOW what do you have to use to "kick start" the system?

Does Acronisis use up recourses or does it run in the background?

Or can it be used when needed?

Windows creates a startup disk, you boot to the disk and it looks for the backup Image on your drives, including any external drives attached to the system.

I have Acronis, didn't much care for the XP version, might have been just me...

I have and use Acronis as well. I was just curious about how the Windows 7 back up works.

I have used Acronis True Image for 3 years now, upgrading about this time every year. I have since installed Windows 7 and used and tested the inbuilt backup and recovery utilities, and no longer consider the extra expense necessary. The first backup takes a long time, and I have seen critisisms levelled at it for that on various forums, but subsequent backups are incremental and are far quicker as a result. Can't see a problem with that myself, especially with the utility now included and therefore supported by Microsoft.

I've heard quite a few complaints for Acronis True Image 2011.  I've been using the Win7 backup utility for my Win7 boxes at home.

I use Ghost 11.5.1 (multicasting to multiple machine using GhostCast Server) at work with Win7 for imaging our training room machines and it works fine.

The backups almost always fail in 2011, and the restorations take for ever.  This was from the first release of 2011 around mid 2010.  I did a quick search to see if you could still buy 2010, and I came across a bunch of people saying 2010 doesn't work.  I am running 2010 v5.055 on a Windows 7 64-bit Core i7 and have never had any problems backing-up or restoring the images, even those approaching 1tb, or creating MBR's.  Plus, the incremental backups seem to work fine.  You can still buy it online, if you look for it.  Buy.com has them for $19.99 including shipping.  Oh, you're in Scottland.  In that case, I wouldn't know where you could buy it.  On the other hand, you could probably download it from some wheres.
