German and Austrian Microphones: an article that may interest you

edit to add: http://www.spaudio.com/SPA_Articles.htm

I'm considering another nice mic for vocals and have finally got around to reading up on the traditional favorites.

I stumbled on these old Mix magazine reprints that have been floating around for a while. I'll bet a bunch of you have seen them... but just in case:

The 3 part Vintage microphones article, while written in an iconoclastic style is filled with cool info about the mics and the early microphone business.

It's shame but the illustrations that had accompanied the article don't seem to be available. any longer... it makes me want to buy some back issues.

I was already familiar with Gotham Audio... it was fun to hear the stories again.

Anyways, I think it's really cool how much Stephen Paul knew about magic.

I hope someone enjoys the articles as much as I just did.

best regards,
mike

I just wanted to point out that these articles have some great info that explains why some people think even the great band names in Europe aren't able to copy their very own older designs... which is info that might be quite helpful if you find your self considering one of the inexpensive vintage reissue style mics that are so common these days.

    I found it very helpful.

It could be fun Holiday reading for someone.

    best regards,
    mike

yeah... I get the dumb guy award for this.... I'll go get the link.

    thanks for the heads up!

    :-)

I've been looking at reissues of the mics mentioned in these articles... and wondering how the price can range from $1k to $13k... this explains some of the reasons some of the mics cost more than I will ever be willing to pay. :-)

The articles sort of explain between the lines why the U87 you tried may not be the U87 that earned the U87 reputation... that sort of stuff. Real interesting for a mic geek.

If I was in Cali like you I'd try to rent some time on them to try out... but it's impossible where I live.

    all the best,
    mike
