Alesis Guitarlink

I'm new to Music Creator 5, and I've been trying to plug my electric guitar into my computer directly.
I've been trying to use an Alesis Guitarlink which is a 1/4" jack (from the guitar) to a USB. I am using Windows 7 with the default soundcard that came with the computer. I don't know how or even IF this cord is compatible with Music Creator 5. Can somebody please let me know if this cable is compatible? If so, could you walk me through the set-up?
Thanks

    Ben , welcome...

I would not recommend using the setup you described. I would get a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter and run the guitar straight into the soundcard input. You can even use a pedal or a line out of an amp or a direct box ( I use a POD2)  to get the signal.... but run it straight to the computer not through the USB cord thing.

I think that you will need to run MC5 in 32 bit mode very likely with MME drivers using your factory card as the input and output.

Should you decide to stick with recording, you will want to upgrade to a better interface. It will make the process easier and more enjoyable.

+1 to what guitarhacker says.  the USB "guitarlink" is a 2nd soundcard.  that will cause problems.

if you do decide to upgrade your soundcard, check my website for some recommendations.

OK... that's good for now... but my comment still stands. You will eventually want to get a real interface to work easier & better.
