Music Creater 5 & Windows 7 64 bit

My current set up is:

Windows 7 64-bit
Realtek audio
M-Audio Keystation 49e

I've updated MC 5 with the Windows 7 patch already, updated the drivers for the Keystation 49e, and am still not understanding why I can't record any MIDI.  I have the input set to the Keystation, and the out to the Realtek soundcard.  I've reinstalled also, but no sounds.  Did I miss a step somewhere?

    Welcome to the forum.
So, you can't record MIDI or there is no sound? Or Both?
Set the MIDI track's input to the MIDI device (Keystation). Set the output to a software or hardware synthesizer. If it's set to the RealTek, you won't hear anything because the RealTek is neither a hardware nor software synthesizer; it's an audio device.
Click the R button in the track. Click the Record button in the transport toolbar. Play the keys.
You don't get any dots and dashes in the track?
To use a hardware synthesizer, select the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synthesizer. It doesn't sound very real, but it's okay for learning on.
To use a software synthesizer, click the Insert button at the top.Select a soft synth. TTS-1 is a pretty good synth. If you already have a MIDI track with data in it, uncheck the Create MIDI Source Track box. If you're starting a new MIDI track, leave that box checked. The synth will insert itself into a new track.
Check that the MIDI track's output is set to the soft synth. Set the channel and bank and patch you want to hear.
Check that the synth track's audio output is set to your sound card (RealTek).

To get sound with midi you need to INSERT a SOFT SYNTH. The usual one to start with is TTS.

If you use the INSERT SYNTH command from the tool bar, I believe it automatically links up the 2 tracks (one midi and one audio and inserts the synth with default settings) so it should be ready to rock.

I also think it inserts a default piano patch..... Visit my website on the Music/MC page for more on working with TTS.

Thank you for the welcome, and the responses

    Here is what I have:
Under the Options > Midi Devices
I have the input set to the Keystation 49e, and the output set to the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.

Whenever I press a key on my keyboard (the keystation) nothing registers in cakewalk on the volume meters

The wave table is not a good option. you should also see your factory card listed. use it.

You need to have a synth in the path to get sound.

follow the instructions on my web page fro setting up TTS  in 2 tracks.... one audio and one midi. choose the synth to output the midi data to..... the synth output should be to the soundcard in the computer (not the wave table) .

Using the factory card will probably result in a noticeable delay or latency. that is very common with factory cards. that can probably be reduced, but we need to get sound first.

HERE>>>> this is from my page: START with a NEW project to get the synth working right before you try adding it to an existing project.

Soft Synth set up for TTS & MC4/5 ( in my system)

Open a new NORMAL project with 1 audio track and 1 midi track.

    INSERT > SOFT SYNTH > CAKEWALK TTS-1

put a check in Midi source, first synth audio output, synth property page and synth rack view.

Click OK….your synth pops up and the synth rack pops up. You can minimize both since you don’t need them.

You will now see 2 new tracks in the project. Both are labeled Cakewalk TTS1-1…this indicates that “first instance” of TTS in the project. One is audio & one is midi. ( in this demo…we will not use the midi track for anything at all)
Expand your view by dragging the bottom of the tracks down.
AT this point I have :
Track 1 audio empty ( not used in this demo)
Track 2 midi empty ( we will set this up as a keyboard track later)
Track 3 Audio TTS1-1 ( this is where TTS lives)
Track 4 midi TTS1-1 (we are not going to use this track)

(NOTE: my keyboard is currently set to transmit on midi channel 6 & my interface is a Focusrite saffire your interface/soundcard should show..so use it)

In Track 2 midi: Input: Focusrite Saffire Channel 6 Output: select cakewalk TTS
Channel 6 ( use omni or what ever channel you are transmitting) bank & patch select piano for this demo. CLICK OK.

Play the keyboard and you should now hear a piano. The meters on the Cakewalk TTS track should be indicating audio as well.

MIDI does not register on any volume meters before MC 6. MC 6 does have MIDI volume meters. Using the MS GS Wavetable, you won't see any meters registering sound level in MC 5.
If you are using a software synthesizer, the soft synth audio track will show the level, but the MIDI track will not.
