Studio Instruments has it's place

Hey all,

I'm loving X1, and I've just started playing with Studio Instruments. When it first came out a few years ago, to be honest it was not up to scratch, but they have quietly slipped SI into X1 and there are 2 instruments that are not bad. There are some pretty good bass sounds, but I really like the way they have organised the strings with them split across the keyboard.  I don't know the ranges of the various stringed instruments and this setup means I don't have to.

Now I play what I want and the splits across the keyboard are sent to the the appropriate string.  And the samples aren't too bad.  I like it.

The drum sounds and loops need work, however I think Cake have a good platform to build on now.

Anyone else using SI?

Being as its a freeebie in X1 now don't think it's going to get any updates. Typically once a pluign gets into SONAR's flagship that pretty much signals the end of any updates.

Sorry, that's just the way it is.

In this case, it ended a lot sooner than that.  When it came out, I thought for sure that it could become "EZkeyboard, --bass, --organ etc."  With midi libraries that would come out on a regular schedule for a price point less than $30.  I've built keyboard tracks by stealing bits and pieces out of midi files I found on the Internet.   I thought for sure this was where they going with the product when I bought it when it was released.

Now, I don't buy add ons and extra bits from Cakewalk because I know that more than likely they will show up for free in a couple of years.

Note to Cakewalk Marketing - you trained me that way.

Yeah, I anticipate getting quite a lot of use out of the Electric Piano, I like that a lot.

I can see the sounds working in Pop, Rock, and electronic tunes. It really depends on the song you're trying to create.

But I also have pretty much everything from Native Instruments, so I'm not wanting for high-quality sounds either. And I use their stuff the most.

Me too Scott. Use mostly NI that is. T
hough Yellow Tools 3 with its 70 GIG sound library is quite a useful beast as well. Then there's IK Multimedia and East West. Oh the choices the choices. What a complaint hey! Too many choices.

    Hey Mike,

Ha! Yeah, I know. Back when I was first getting started, all I had access to was a Roland JX-8P keyboard. I loved that thing, but I can't believe how many different instruments and sounds that I have access to now. I can pretty much create any kind of music that I want in the comfort of my own home! It's incredible how far we've come...

I wasn't a synth/midi sort of guy, so back in the days, everything I recorded was based around drums, bass and guitar. A bit of piano here and there.

If the song called for other type of sounds, the only way around was to try to mimic those sounds and textures w/ my guitar - sax, pads, whatever...  It was all guitars. And a lot of imagination.

Recording on a computer changed all of that.

I remember the first time I loaded a mellotron soundfont... Epiphany moment! I almost felt as if I was walking into Abbey Road for the Sgt. Pepper sessions.

Incidentally, as prominent as the guitar used to be, with all the sounds available nowadays, I barely record guitars anymore, basically just when the song calls for it.

    Hey Rain,

Sounds like you had a lot of fun being innovative back then. But yeah, computers and MIDI really changed the music landscape. And now with the things that can be done with audio (via products like Melodyne), our imaginations can be explored to their fullest.

I think those strings can be snuck into the background on a track with a little verb and sound very authentic.

    Hi Scott,

Yes those were indeed fun times. I guess one could look at it and say that the limitations forced us to be creative - because it did - whereas, now, with all the options at hand, it's easy to get caught in the process.

Personally, I think it helped shape my approach. So now I get to do that on a much larger scale because I can abuse every instrument, not just the guitar. :P As long as there something to learn and as long as it serves the song...

Plus I'm not worried about limitations - I got plenty of them on my own to keep me creative for a couple of lifetimes.

I bought SI several years ago when I was using Home Studio and didn't have very many other soft synths.  I was quite pleased with the package.  The bass, strings, and electric piano were used often in my projects.  I started using Jamstix for my drums at about the same time IIFC.

Same as the other posters, I have since acquired other soft synths that do a better job but I still sometimes use Si for a quick sketch pad without loading up a lot of samples.  Occasionally an SI part may even make it to the final mix.

I don't like paying for something that eventually gets included in Sonar for free but I think it is good for a newcomer to have these options available from the get-go.

Hi a newbie here. I have a question and I hope I have the right forum. How do I insert preset bass or string track in SHS7?  I'm able to insert a midi track/SI-Bass. I click on effecte and right click in the dark grey area/soft synth/studio instruments/bass guitar/and create a pattern grid, but how do I get it to play in the track. I tried everything, well I guess not everything if I couldn't get it to work.

paulclaro, I skipped SHS7 but I think it would be the same process as Sonar.  It has been a while since I used HS and no longer have it on my PC so this may or may not help you.

Insert the the SI Bass and check the simple instrument track when the options appear on screen.  Click OK.  Go to the output selector in the track options or the inspector for the newly created Bass track and select your output buss or device.

Add your MIDI notes or pattern in the same track making sure the notes are in the range of the synth.  It seems that I would sometimes have to transpose imported bass MIDI clips up one octave to be in the range of the synth.

Double click on the keyboard/MIDI symbol looking icon in the bass track in between the track number and track name to bring up the SI Bass interface.  Choose a bass preset in the program browser at the top.

Hit play and you should hear the bass playing your notes.

You may want to ask this in the SHS forum if this fails to help you.

    Good luck.
