Studio Instruments Drums How to

I have been seeing a lot of posts about not being able to get the prerecorded patterns onto the track time line. I just figured it out so I thought i would share.
Insert a SI Drum kit into the track view
double click the icon to open the drum kit window
select one of the programs ( I used Jazz&Blues 12bar1)
click to highlight the name and drag from the name to the track and drop there.
now the pattern should be in the track time line.

For some reason you can't drag from the pattern grid to the track. I guess that would make too much sense ;/
once you have everything set you can copy the pattern to another track like the TTS-1 and change the instrument. Kind of fun.

There is a certain logic to it.
Picture  a buffet. The patterns loaded into the grid are selections made by one person, and placed on his plate.
The track is another person. If he wants a certain pattern, he doesn't take it from the other persons plate, he takes it from the bufet.

The pattern grid is great for auditioning the patterns, and determining how you might want to arrange them in your project. Once you have your ideas down, you can drag the patterns from the source, and into your track, for a more permanent rendition.
    Does that make sense?

Also, if you insert your soft synths(s) with separate MIDI source tracks and Synth Audio Outputs, as oposed to Simple Instrument Tracks, you don't need to copy the pattern.
Simply re-assign the output of the MIDI track to the other synth. If you are using a synth  like TTS-1, you can specify channels, and try your patterns on several different instruments. It's very flexible, and kind of mind boggling at first. Once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.
btw, that's one wild looking violin.

Makes perfect sense. Great analogy. I have been trying to use the TTS-1 synth, I can see that there is a ton of potential there but as of yet I haven't been able to use it to full effect. it seems that I ought to be able to use 1 instance of it with multiple instruments for an ensemble effect. Haven't figured that one out yet.

Yes, you can send 16 MIDI channels to 1 instance of TTS-1.
Each MIDI track has to use a different channel. Each MIDI track should have it's banks and patches set in the MIDI track pane.

That is a stock photo from the company I bought the fiddle from but mine is exactly like that one.
http://www.ceciliomusic.com/catalog/stringselectricviolins-c-3_31.html It is an inexpensive one and I had to upgrade the strings and bridge after i got it, but it sounds great. I like the real ebony tailpiece, chin rest, fingerboard, and pegs. the tailpiece and pegs also have mother of pearl inlay.
thinking of getting a Line 6 amp for it but need to save up for it.
As to hearing my music. well... I am just getting back into playing after a 20 year of not playing. Still some tuning issues lol. I have only played Classical stuff and am trying to broaden my horizons. I am totally new to recording (don't know squat)but I am learning thanks to you guys. Have only had MC5 for 2 weeks now and it is my first experience with recording and composing.

I just figured out how to use the TTS-1. Got 4 MIDI tracks going through it with different instruments...cool stuff
Can anyone suggest an inexpensive keyboard to record MIDI with. been using staff view and it is kind of a chore.

You could probably pick up a MIDI keyboard at a pawn shop for next to nothing. Even some of the new ones are less than $100.
Or you could spring for a MIDI controller. That's just the keys without any sounds. Some of them are less than $100, too. M-Audio makes some good ones. But then you'd have to use software synthesizers to hear anything, and depending on your sound card, latency may rear it's ugly head.
Look for something that connects via USB if you don't have a MIDI ports in your computer or sound card.

I have some latency issues with the Amplitube and my sound card. I am thinking of getting a M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface. They are not too expensive and I can pick one up In stock locally.

Cool. See if they can fix you up with a package deal; the FT Pro and an M-Audio Oxygen MIDI Controller.

Hey, I didn't start another thread because I saw this posted here:

"I have been seeing a lot of posts about not being able to get the prerecorded patterns onto the track time line. I just figured it out so I thought i would share.

I've been looking for the easiest way to get a prerecorded pattern on the track timeline. For some reason when I try to drop it in the track it looks like it will work, but then doesn't appear. I fiddled around earler and got it to work in a different way, but this sounds easier. Could it be my input and output? again, sorry if this post doesn't belong here. I'm still learning the forum as well

You're good Paul. It's the same subject, drum patterns.
Inputs and outputs have nothing to do with dragging loops or clips ino a MIDI track. I don't have SI Drums, but according to RobertB's post above, you drag the clip name from the pattern list, not from the pattern grid. I think I can infer what those are.
Or, using the pattern brush tool, you can select from many MIDI drum patterns and draw them into a track using the Piano Roll view (PRV). They may even be the same patterns as those in SI Drums. You're not restricted to using SI Drum's interface. There are tons of ways to get drums into a project. I usually write my own, beat by beat in the PRV.
