help my e-drums are in another room than my computer with cakewalk.

I gave my daughter this tool to start recording her own stuff, and she wants me to laydown drum parts using my e-drum kit.

The main computer is a desktop and is located in office. We don't have XLR or MIDI interface yet, but obviously that will be needed.

The drums are in my room and have midi-in and midi-out ports.

I do have a laptop that I can move next to the drums, I'll have to figure out sending my drum parts thru midi out port to the laptop. What I don't know is after I have recorded the drum part in midi format how to import that into her project on the main computer.

Any ideas how to do this? I imagine this the situation for many of you out there.

    My plan would be to:
    1.  Buy a USB audio interface with both Audio & MIDI connections.
    2.  Install HomeStudio on both the laptop and desktop (CW allows 2 installs).
    3.  Set up a project on the laptop, making sure to use Per-Project Folders.
    4.  Record the MIDI from your kit into the laptop project.
    5.  Copy the project folder to the desktop.
    6.  Have your daughter open the desktop project, and insert a drum synth to play the MIDI track.

Thanks for the step by step, I appreciate that. I guess our next purchase is the interface, then probably a cheap midi keyboard.

Do you know if a midi drum kit recorded into a project will supply a separate .MID file?

Tomorrow I'll read up on my drum module's midi output for a song.

    Thanks again

Create a new folder on your laptop's desktop. Call it 'MIDI files'. You record the drums on the laptop and export the MIDI to that folder. Then save it to a USB drive or CD and carry it over to the desktop computer. Open SHS, File>Import MIDI. Or export the drum file directly to the CD or USB drive. Shoot, you can even email it to the other computer.
