Soft Synths Lose Visual Feedback

Weird issue with Sonar 8.5.   I have midi tracks and load in  Softsynths - e.g. cakewalk TTS, SessionDrummer.   I'll test them out; hear them fine; get normal visual feedback (i.e. meters flashing, drum pads being hit/lit).  Then they just stop "visually" responding.  I can still hear the synths, but no more visual feedback.  I'll close the synth windows; reopen; they'll work again for 30+ secs; then stop responding again.

I reinstalled but wondered if anyone experienced such a problem?

Thanks.

Well it looks like I found the answer to my own question, although I'm not too happy about.  It seems I lose visual feedback when I  float windows (synths) on my multi-monitor display.  As soon as I enable the tabbed view, and the synth sits inside the tab at window bottom, the visual feedback is fine; once I float it, it works for a few secs and then stops responding.  Just in case anyone else has gone crazy with this!!

FYI: the two monitors are run "independently" since one supports 1920x1200 the other 1280x1024.  Still not sure "why" it happens; but I have proven this scenario 10x over.  Not happy about this

Weird... I'm on 8.53/WinXP/DualMon and don't see this issue at all - i.e. I can see the soft synth activity whether I have the console view floating or tabbed. So it must be something to do with your system or that project. Dumb questions but I'll ask them anyway - have you played with any of your Sonar meter settings recently? are the tracks where you can't see the activity still armed for recording?

The problem (even) happens in play/preview mode - i.e. I'll open up SesionDrummer or TTS and when I play the samples it freezes.   So again, I'll open up the synth, load a program, play sample, see it fine for about 5-10 secs then zap... no more visual feedback.  Sound is still fine though.  Repeat the same exact process inside tabbed window and it displays fine.

FYI: this happens for *every* plugin.  So, for instance I'll add a reverb FX and play with the controls;  then after 10sec they die (only visually).  I can still "adjust" properties but the controls don't actually move.  Inside tabbed window they work!   Perplexing!

Not sure what you mean by "playing with Sonar meter settings?"

One thing that crossed my mind is if it has anything to do with the Visual C++ distributable that gets installed with software.  I'm sure I upgraded this with some other unrelated app.  I'm grasping here, right?

    Thanks.

"playing with Sonar meter settings?" - I meant had you amended any of Sonar's various meter configuration options recently - i.e. switched off some metering. But that's a moot point now since you DO see some initial meter activity, then it freezes... ditto: plugin visual controls too...

It does sound core software-related so I guess it could be the C++ distributable... Maybe the other software loaded an earlier version of this library?

I can only think to suggest that you reinstall Sonar, I'm afraid. Before you do that I suggest you make backup copies of all your projects, project & track templates, VST/plugin libraries etc. You may have to manually record any particular favourite plugin presets that you've created as I think these are stored in the registry, rather than in any folders (although I'm not sure about that, tbh)

Thanks very much for your thoughts and recommendation.  I'm going to investigate this a bit further and will post back to the forum once I (hopefully!) find something.

    Thanks again!

Rob, Thanks for posting.  Is this happening mainly with your 64-bit or 32 bit VSTs?  I discovered with bit-bridge running my 32-bit VSTis that I'll lose sound (triggered from a midi keyboard controller) when the GUI is open.  If I minimize (or close) the GUI the sound starts playing again. :(

I've reinstalled as well, but no luck.  I'm running SONAR X1a, 64-bit, Windows 7.

Updating video card drivers seems to have done the trick for me.  Thanks Beagle!

I'm currently having a same kind of challenge. The plugins sound great, but at least at some point the visuals stop to refresh. I re-installed Sonar, (it's S6P I'm using) and also the graphic card drivers. Hmmm... Anyone has any idea how could you proceed in this kind of situation? Could it be something related to DirectX drivers or stuff?

Try updating the video driver. I had some weirdness and that fixed it.
