Can someone help me with basic guidance on next step...Chow Lee

Calkwalk Experts!  I need to tap your wisdom...

I have a DELL D800, 1.80 G Processor, 1028 Ram, Windows XP Pro
Sonar LE 8.5.1.17
Samson CO1U  USB mic (which is where got free Sonar)
A beautiful 88 weighted key controller (no internal sounds)

and about 20% less hair since I started using Calkwalk, it's been no Calkwalk but sure have heard all the jokes.

Now successfully making amature 'audio' recordings with just guitar/vocals; very cool and now laying down some midi sounds; drums using the sounds inside SONAR LE.

PROBLEM:  There's no bass, and usable strings sounds (a whole section of space bass sounds, go figure) and I'm too cheap to buy an interface for the old Korg I have.

QUESTION:   What's my next step?
Am I missing something, sounds are there but just can't find or that's what comes with free version?

Do I need an upgrade to Sonar X1 Essential?  I saw the pitch on it; has bass sounds, string sounds, (the LE has Bright Piano, which is OK and decent drums).  I'm concerned with having to relearn anything different.  Is the X1 Essential different than the LE or (hopefully) just adds to what LE is.
Thanks for your help.  Chow Lee

I would say firstly sort out your sound card.. not use the onboard.. as it probably doesn't have asio support.. which make things a lot easier

you saw my guide to setting up the co3 ? it should be the exact same as the c01...

but you'll notice I use audio cards designed for music making..

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1618556

x1 is slightly different for sure. but it also addes to what LE is.. I mean LE , when you bought the mic.. thats what your REALLY paying for.. the LE was hhmm an extra.. to get you started

the principles are the same though.. but I do think sorting out your soundcard, if you haven't will help heaps

Hi Chow Lee,  I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if Drop Zone doesn't have a decent bass guitar then there isn't one with your version of Sonar.  In addition, I know that you don't want to hear this, but you are not going to be able to do much with your current computer.  If you did get a decent sounding VST you wouldn't be able to use it, effectively.  For example, Sonar X1 Essential requires at least an Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.67 GHz, or an AMD Phenom Quad Core 9750 2.4 Ghz, and 2gb's of Ram.  However, on a possitive note, Sonar X1 Essential does come with really good bass guitar and drum sounds.

Working with what you've got, if your Korg has decent bass guitar sounds, then I would buy a cable and insert one end into the left audio output of your Korg and the other end into the computer mic input; or if your computer has a stereo input, use a cable with two mono plugs on one end and a stereo plug on the other, plug size accordingly.

Yea, you don't say what the korg is, which would be the easiest way to produce bass sounds (and more) if it is decent.  But you will need an interface - do a search, there are tons of threads.  I've run SONAR on under spec'ed computers, but it is a hassle.  With what you have you might get away w/ a softsynth, but a hardware recording would bypass CPU problems all together.  It takes very little CPU to run a bunch of tracks, tho a 2nd hard drive helps.
