BUG: Sonar X1 and Reason 5.01 rewired - Playback while recording.
Hi all, In previous versions of Sonar and Reason I had everything setup excellent. Since upgrading to Sonar X1 and running Reason 5.01, when I hit record in the Host X1, it records fine and I can hear the audio. When recording a second track from my rewired Reason, I cannot hear any of the playback audio while recording (just the track Im actually recording, none of the other tracks). The playback state works fine, its just being able to hear the audio tracks of reason while recording. It was so long ago that I setup everything and might be missing something. If you know would appreciate the 411. Thanks! Best,

Do you have share devices with other programs unchecked (audio preferences)? What are you recording, Reason's output in realtime, midi via X1 into Reason or something other than? I'm missing some info here.

Hi Jon thats not the issue. After some experimenting, it looks like Sonar X1 ISNT sending Reason and midi playback data during a recording session. Now, on a normal playback its fine, but reocrding I see 0 midi input action within Reason. So as far as the audio is concerned, it will play each sound find even while recording, but the HOST (X1) is not sending the midi data already recorded within Sonar during a recording session to Reason rewired. Another words, audio is fine and working during a record (switched tracks, played them all) but X1 is NOT sending any midi data besides the tracks I am recording.

Ill map it out probably make it easier. This happens on a RECORD within Sonar X1 [Sonar X1] >-No Data Sent- \ ------Rewire Midi Data-------->> [Reason 5] [A-Pro 800] >_Sends Data __/ basically again anything from my controller plays during a record, but anything already recorded into Sonar X1, that midi data is not sent over rewire at all. Looks like a BUG. Can anyone confirm?

"And you are routing your other midi tracks out to the specific Reason devices you want to sound and have them set to echo their output?" I hear it fine on a playback, this ONLY occurs when I record a rewired track. Very odd that it will not send data only when recording.

8.53 and R4 I don't route the same was as you though because I use regroove a lot I use a virtual midi port and record midi in Reason so I'm effectively just recording one track via Sonar into my current Reason track and Reason is playing back it's own previously recorded midi alongside it. I'll do some quick tests using the same routing as you and see what I come up with though.

Yup, it all works swell on my setup. From a blank project. One track set to a bass combi recorded into Sonar. Track 2 routed to an elec piano recorded fine, pre-recorded bass playing back fine. Track 3 to drum kit using ezplayer just to try a different input device recorded successfully whilst previous 2 tracks are playing back. No fancy setting up or specific echoing just loading Reason via rewire and ezplayer, pointing each tracks output to a relevant combi loaded in Reason, arming it and then recording. So it all works in 8.5 which is suggesting a difference in X1 somewhere to me being as the addition of a drum module, a few sequencer tweaks and a rex player update hasn't likely broken R5 Actually I just laid down quite a nice groove there maybe I'll keep it.

Jon, yes it looks like a X! bug. What I can do is this.. if I start a playback it plays normally as you know, but during playback I can hit record and record and hear playback like I am looking to do. Something with X1, rewire, and when you hit record stationary it doesnt want to send rewire midi data to the slave. Anyone else have x1 and reason they can try ?

Hi all, Again allot of testing. Audio is working fine with reason in both playback and recording states. It looks like Sonar X1 is not sending midi data from clips via rewire from a armed record start (it will play midi clip data though if you start the playback first then hit record). Id really like to know if anyone else uses Sonar X1 and reason 5 to test this out.

"On the track you record, do you press the yellow knob to hear the audio direct? Or did you forget? " I take it you are taking about input monitoring. If so, it does not fix the issue. Its not an audio issue, the problem is Sonar X1 is not sending MIDI data via rewire when you are recording a track within sonar X!. Best,

That is a real deal breaker for me until that gets fixed. Has it been reported? I doubt then the long standing issue of no stereo inputs being available on anything other than the first two channels has been fixed either. I can live with that using mono pairs but the midi transmission being broken in Rewire is a real biggie for me.

Silly question......do you have a count-in measure set for SONAR? I had a 1 measure count-in set and caused the exact problem you're describing...this was in 8.5 however (I know you're using X1). Anyway when I set it to 0 the problem went away

Hi Emwhy, Yup thats it! Count in was set to 1 (though unfortunately I cannot live without a count in). This is a obvious bug and not working as intended with Sonar 8/X1. did you report it? If so this needs to be addressed asap.

If so this needs to be addressed asap. Much like multiple proper stereo channels from Rewire as inputs, that has been the same since S7 at least. The workaround has always been to use separate mono pairs panned apart if you are using any Rewire capable app that uses more than the first stereo pair. It will be nice if that did, or ever will, get fixed but I have a sneaking feeling there is still no change there for some strange reason. Upward of 3 years waiting for that particular fix is probably asking too much of a 'small' company I know... I'll probably get called out and told it is not a priority as not many require that functionality, but I can't help but wonder how many users would be using Sonar if that aspect of functionality actually worked instead of moving to another DAW to get the job done.

But are issues like these really on Cakewalk's shoulders? ReWire wasn't developed by them, but by Propellerhead....who BTW have no desire to develop it for 64 bit, which is a problem for me. I don't use ReWire or Reason nearly as much as I used to because of this. Scott have you tired setting Reason's transport for pre roll as well when you use SONAR's count-in?

Isn't that like saying that Cakewalk by rights only need support Kontakt with the first stereo out, the rest you can use mono pairs because VSTi isn't Cakewalks standard? Rewire works with stereo ins on anything bar Sonar where it hasn't been implemented fully. As well as being a 64bit app Sonar is still a fully supported 32 bit one no? Rewire was a capability clearly advertised to me at the point of purchase as being available and figured in my buying decision.

Scott According the the 8.5.3 manual what you are experiencing is 'intended' behaviour. ReWire tracks silent when using metronome record count-in When using a metronome count-in and recording, any ReWire tracks will be silent at the start of recording. The silence period will equal the count-in duration. To fix this issue, disable metronome count-in (go to Options > Project > Metronome and set Record Count-in to zero). Looks like you'll have to run a pre-recorded click track count-in or does the reason 'nome work for what you need?

"According the the 8.5.3 manual what you are experiencing is 'intended' behaviour." I dunno that sounds like a bug that got swept under the rug by a "intended behaviour" disclaimer. It makes absolutely no sense that you have to change the count in to make certain plugins to work properly. Using a 0 count-in is not an option for me so Ill give cakewalk a call tomorrow and see why this hasnt been looked into.
