Alesis ControlPad Midi setup issues

I do not have any other MIDI instruments, so I wanted to see if I could set up my Alesis ControlPad to trigger the built in drum sounds in Sonar X1.
 
I plugged the ControlPad in through the USB port and X1 does see it, which I verified through Preferences/MIDI Devices/Input/Output.
 
What else to I need to set up in order for the ControlPad to trigger a Soft Synth sound?  When I chose a drum sound, I see it in the track, but can't hear anything.

    I figured out this issue and now am able to trigger the ControlPad - but have another one with this setup.  I have a slight latency issue now.  I already have my buffer size as fast as possible, so what other settings could cause this?
