You should look at your signal chain before it hits sonar, because you should be able to hear what your playing before it hits sonar. so look at your sound card's properties and mixer section. Because if you need input echo to hear your audio, then its something before it hits sonar

What audio interface are you using to record with? Does it have input (direct) monitoring? If so, then maybe you have accidentally disabled it.

It is normal to have to enable the Input Echo in Sonar to hear anything live through an audio input. If you have heard live audio before in Sonar without having to enable Input Echo, then you were using some feature of your interface/mixer to hear it. This is very common as most good audio interfaces include some kind of input/direct monitoring and most mixers allow you to route signals in a way that allows you to hear what is being sent to the computer. It is impossible for us to tell you what to change without knowing exactly how your mixer/interface is set up.

Your best course of action is to go to your Yamaha device user manual and research input, or direct, monitoring. This is much simpler than you might think it is and chances are you can quickly solve your problem by learning more about how to use your interface/mixer.

I had a number of preamps that also had monitoring abilities and came to think about the balance that enables latencyfree monitoring while playing.

Did you change this, or are using a different setup than before?

And also, not being absolutely clear in original post, if midi and not audio there is a setting for global arming echo whenever a midi track is active, or something like that. Same as manually enabling echo for midi.

Hi Ral. not gonna be much help except to say that I've always had to activate the input echo to hear my input. I use a Motu 896hd which has the ability to monitor latency free, but I've never had any luck setting it up, so I always just activate input echo.

you should have said it was MIDI. you need input echo to hear your soft synths. That's a fact. I dont know what you did before, but you need to enable input echo to hear the soft synths play MIDI.
You do not need it for audio and thats what I thought you meant before. But it needs to be enabled if your using soft synths
