Disappearing TTS-1 Solved?????

Hello Gang -
Could be I'm doing something wrong, and could be this was discussed (but there are a gazillion X-1 threads now!) But . . .  I pulled a couple of midi songs into X-1 to play with routing, screensets, etc - but after saving and reopening, TTS-1 is gone and disconnected.

But it's midi tracks are still there.
All assignments for other tracks revert back to the interface midi out.

At first, I made the mistake of just saving, which saved as a midi 1 file.  After realizing my mistake, I renamed, saved as a cwp, and closed.  Come back to it and same thing - TTS-1 gone, and track view only opens up even though I saved it with the synth docked, etc.

Is it me?  Thanks in advance.

Brian

Brian do you have locked Screen Set that reverts back to not showing it? Is it down in the Multi dock?

Help me understand...you are saving the whole project as a Cakewalk project, and when you re-open it, TTS-1 is gone and disconnected?

I have not had that happen to me yet, but I'm willing to test it here if you can type up a step-by-step repro.

    Thanks for asking - - -

The midi files were not of my making - not that it should matter.

Opened the file from the Recent Files Drop Down.
Went to "Save As' and saved as "Normal" with Audio Routing  to indivdual files etc. (No audio in Project, however.
Insert TTS-1 from insert drop down - creating midi and audio tracks.
Assign all midi tracks to output to TTS - 1 using difeferent instruments including GM drums on track 10
Save several times along the way.
Play, listen, no bouncing, no freezing.
    Save before closing.

Come back later - open project from Recent (with the new name, of course.)
TTs-1 audio track is gone, all midi tracks reassigned to M-Audio.
No sign of TTs-1 anywhere, except that the midi tracks created when inserting the synth are stilll there.  I dunno . . . . . .

I'll do some light testing here.  Will help me gain a better understanding of TTS-1, although I don't plan to use it much after today.  It is DXi, and DXi will be going away eventually, so I don't want to create a legacy project problem.

Which kind of leads me to a question for folks about TTS-1.  Does anybody here know of any decent "VST" General MIDI players?

I only grabbed the TTS-1 for simplicity - no need to insert a bunch of synths to get a handle on workflow.  I'm just kind of surprised that it seems to go away.  I'll be trying Dimension and True Pianos to see if they stick later on.

As for VST GM synths - I think you are going to find that the proliferation of quality samplers have reduced the need for multi-timbral GM type synths in higher end DAW applications. With all the PC muscle out there - - specialization rules!

Specialization rules.  Yes, you are right about that!

By the way, I have done some limited testing with DP and Kontakt 4 and have not experienced the disappearance problem.  Not yet, anyhow...  But those are VST, not DXi.

I wonder if that may have something to do with it.

Brain I just tried to duplicate your scenario and got the same result but I was able get TTS-1 back by double clicking the MIDI icon on the MIDI track. It was minimized really weird in the bottom near, but not in, the multi dock. I'll try again.

I have my Screen Set 1 locked and that hides the multi-dock when I reopen the file. If I put TTS-1 in the multi dock with that Screen Set unlocked (saved) it opens exactly as I closed it. Is your opening Screen Set locked?

Hmmm...read again and didn't see the 'disconnected' part. Mine stays connected and works fine or at least how it's been re-designed.

Well, I just inserted an instance of Dimension Pro.  Same thing.  Save it, exit, open it back up and the Dimension audio track is gone as is the DP GUI.

I think it must have something to do with the handling of the midi file.  I dragged it in to X1 to get the project going.

I am going to try to create a new project and copy/paste clips into it and see what happens.

Strange. MIDI flies are, if anything, pretty benign creatures. Hard to imagine one causing problems but am curious as to what you find.

Does it work OK if you record your own MIDI?

    Larry,

Benign is why I thought to play with them to get some X1 magic going.  I haven't tried anything else yet - I will post what I find (I am surely open to the prospect of having done something incorrectly!)

    Thanks for your input!

This has been solved - sort of. The file was saved in a folder on my desk top. Once I moved it to the Cakewalk Projects folder the synth stayed assigned to the project.  However, I could not make the TTS-1 in an opened docked state save as such in a screen set, locked or otherwise. Could be a limitation of the synth?  Go figure . . . . .
